Higley of Des Moines, who was re- cently appointed superintendent of! Indian work of the Methodist Epis- copal Church. who is here attending the conference of Ameican lndlan' missionaries. “There are more than one-third of a milion Indians in the United States.” added Rev. Higl ;, “and fifty-seven distinct languages are spoken. What Survey Shows. “A survey among the Indians has Just recently been made by the cen- tenary officials and shows that mot only the full-blooded Indians are in- creasing. but also the mixed bloods, with better homes, medical attention. and better care of Indian bables; and with the missionaries taking the gos- pel of soap, sanitation and salvation, the increase of the number of Indians will continue. ‘“Two-thirds cannot understand the American language. Thirteen per cent of the Indians are afflicted with tuberculosis, and 80,000 suffer from trachoma. Jpune 14—Dr. Wil- Mam Crawford Long was officially rec- ognized today by the University of Georgia as the discoverer of anes- thesia. This action was taken despite t!fie decision of the Hall of Fame in New York, which recently awarded the homor to Dr. Willlam Thomas Green Morton of Massachusetts. The iversity authorities declared they e evidence to prove that Dr. Long first used ether for a surgical operation March 30, 1842, which, they say, was four years prior to any other known record of the use of anes- thetics. A bronze memorial was un- veiled today to Dr. Long, who was an alumnus of the university.
