CLEVELAND, June 9.—Many Cleve- land business men have expressed themselves of late as convinced that the country mey enjoy prosperity de- spite declines in some lines, and are urging change of methods to meet present conditiong. Great speed in turnover Is essential, they assert. Smaller profits may be expeoted, they state, but satisfactory net returns are entirely possible. Business has changed but little here. Garment manufacturers havée made arrangements with labor providing for greater continuity of work, and garments will be manufactured at lower prices than a year ago. They are preparing to start on fall busi- ness immediately, instead of waiting until July, @s usual. Large retailers say sales are fairly satisfactory. Insolvencies have been remarkably few, only three or four of consequence having been reported The steel industry continues to sag and the automobile business is not so active in general as a month ago, al- though one manufagiurer reports or- ders for three-month capacity pro- duction. SEATTLE, Wash, June 9.—A new source of wealth to the Pacific north- west has been found by packers of the razor clams of Snug Harbor, Cooks inlet, Alaska Slack demand for canned salmon has led to invest- ment of large sums in clam packing, the meat of the big bivalve being cut and canned. Markets, it is said, have been developed all over the country, and packers assert the industry is past the infancy stage. Local merchandising is normal, de- partment stores reporting fair aver- age business. Generous buying of sporting goods, especially 'in _the smaller towns, with inconsaguential reduction of prices, is regarded by wholesalers as indicatien of whole- some reaction. Fall in Prices.
