“§980 A DAY FARE - PAID BY CHILDREN J. C. Wright Renews Cam- * paign for Special Rates on Car Lines. Street car fares paid by the children i/of Washington to go to and from =school amounts to $980 a day or $191,- .00 a year, according to J. C. ‘Wright, 514 T street, who renewed his cam- Daign today to have Congress provide special rates on the traction lines for school children. In a supplementary petition to chairmen of. the Senate and House District committees Mr. Wright requests that “something be done to ; lighten the car-fare burden unneces- sarily placed upon the helpless school . children of Washington.” i ¢ “Street car fares are no less an ed-, deational facility than schoolhouses,” i ‘the petition states, “and car fare for school children should be within the: + means of the humblest home. For no reason whatsoever should the street cars of Washington operate at a profit exacted and derived from school chil- dren, and 1 again solicit your co-opera- tion to the end that Congress may au- thorize a lower car fare for the school children—the same to be either half fare or not less than six tickets for a quarter—and thereby grant financial relief to many parents who, to keep their children in school, are struggling . against the pitiless odds.” The petition points out that in Cin- cinnati, which has a population of 401,247, the street car fare is 9 cents or two tickets for 17 cents. “This year,” said Mr. Wright, “6,527 tRupils enrolled in the day and night ! classes in Cincinnati pay full fare in riding to and from school. In other words, the pupils cited pay more than $L100 a day for car fare, or approxi- inately $200,000 annually. *- “The population of Washington is 437,671 or 36,324 more than the popu- lation of Cincinnati. It seems reason- sble then to assume that Washington has & larger school enrollment than that at least as any, if not Jmore, pupils ride to and {rom school on the street cars, and that at the present Tate of four tokens for 30 cents the car fare paid by the pupils attending the day and night schools in Washing- ton is approximately $980 a day or .31’1.000 a year.” WAITING FOR THE CAR, To the Editor of The Star: Your editorial, “Waiting for the Car,” in Thursday's paper seems to overlook entirely the possibility that it any one should wait on the side- walk, as you suggest, they would have the pleasure of seeing the street car pass swiftly up the street with- out them. Where there are no plat- forms there may be few passengers, and at least in the rural districts, ‘where 1 most frequently board a car, there are more seats than passengers, there can be no question of want- ing to be first. The rule which re- i Quires automobiles to stop fifteen feet ; back of a stopping street car may be /. a blessing to .passengers wishing to ' alight, but it is quite the reverse for any one wishing to board a car. The disposition of automobilists to push ahead, which you mention, is very and greatly interferes witk the *View of the motorman just at the moment when the would-be passen- ger on the sidewalk is trying to catch his eye. The dangers of standing in : are obvious, but your rem- edy would lead to many cold suppers. ‘WINSLOW H.
