February 1.—One million marks ($250,000) was spent here last night at a fashionable ball at the very time German newspapers were broad- casting the slogan that Germany was “unable” to pay the war indemnity fixed at Paris. It was a typical in- stance of the “starving Germany of today.” The event was a ball given by the Berlin Press Association. {he most fashionable event of the season, which “everybody” attends.
