BY WILLIAM H. BRAYDEN. By Cable to The Star and Chicago Daily News. opyright, 1921, DUBLIN, Ireland, January 26.—The frst fmportant results of the military combing out of Dublin were seen in the court-martial today of four men charged ‘with one of the murders of officers on “Bloody Sunday.” Evidently the plan is to round up every suspected person and see if witnesses can identify the men concerned. More than a year lapsed after the Phoenix Park mur- d.r! in 1882 before everybody had been tried, but the military within two months have arrested about a dozen men whom they can charge with some of the four- teen murders of November 25. ‘The court-martial assembled in the city hall now commandeered by the military, because its proximity to the castle i8 regarded as making it a good springboard for a Sinn Fein coup on the center of the government. CARSON REFUSES POST. Carson, the Ulster unionist leader, declined the premiership of the new Ulster parliament, which was offered him today by an Ulster deputation in London. He thanked the deputation for the honor, but said he felt his age trength to undertake the arduous duties involved. He agreed, however, for the present to wccept the chairmanship of the Ulster party in the imperlal parliament. It is expected that the offer of the premiership now will be made to Sir James Craig, who represents Mid- Down in the British parliament and is parliamentary secretary to the ad- miralty, and would probably accept. OORK, January 25.—Mary Bewles, a fifteen-year-old girl, was court-mar- tialed today, but sentence was de- ferred. The girl was arrested after she had been discovered crossing a fleld with arms in her possession, having dropped a Lewis gun in her flight from the police. She also was found to be wearing steel body armor, which was produced in court today, as were the arms. At the trial she refused to plead and remained silent throughout. SIMS RAPS SINN FEIN. and lacked “Inconceivable How Irish-Ameri- cans Can Support Them.” BOSTON, January 26.—Rear Admi ‘William 8. Sims, at a mass meetihg arranged by the Loyal Coalition last night, said that to him it was incon- ceivable that American citizens of Irish nationality could support the Sinn Fein, “knowing what they do about them. “How any American of Irish de- scent can support a party that was our implacable enemy during our war, mne my understanding,” the admiral Slnn Fein activities, he asserted, ne- cessitated the diversion of vessels from the convoy of troops and of merchant ships. ol “And you peoph here in America,’ he added, “have a great many of your sons at the bottom of the sea today because we were obliged to divert those vessels and could not give ade- quate protection. “We were fighting against the Ger- mans and the central powers, but they were fighting in the open. They fought the submarine under the water, ‘but that is the way to fight to subma- rines. The Sinn Fein were fighting us just as bitterly and behind our backs.” ICTOR HUGO wrote most of his A~ novels stand- ing at a shelf in a room three sides of which were glass. He tossed the numbered sheets to the floor fast as written. His house- keeper then carefully collected them. gThere are certain tasks it profits you to regularly or occasionally assign to others.
