Jumper the Hare, racing for his life, was terribly {rightened. Of course. Wouldn't you be terribly frightened if ou knew that only vour legs and your wits could save, vour life? So Jumper was terribly frightened as he made the best possible use of his long legs, bound- ing over the snow through the Green Forest with Whitey the Snowy Owl fol- lowing on swift, silent wings and swoop- ing down at him at every chance. _But frightened as he was, Jumper didn’t forget to use his wits. He knew i that his legs alone couldn’t save him. The great broad wings of Whitey were quite as good as Jumper's long legs. They were even better, for sthey would not tire as quickly. So Jumper depended on his wits as much as on legs. He dodged around trees. You know Jumper is a famous dodger. That is why he prefers the Green Forest, especially that part of it where there are young trees 1 growing close together. 1t is wonder- ful how he can dodge in and out and around and about among them. Peter Rabbit, watching that race for life, was so excited it was all he could do to keep from dancing up and down He did venture to sit up straight so as to see better. “That fellow ha ness down here,” muttered Peter as he watched Whitey swoop and just miss Jumper. “He belongs up in_the Far North. It must be a hard up_there to bring him down here. 1 don’t see what he is doing over here in the Green Forest. The last time he was down here he didn’t get far from the Big River. - best. Oh, dear, T do h Jumper Wwill find a safe hiding pxa«-:!”n 'osfd be dreadful to have anything happen to Cousin Jumper! Oh-h-h That last exclamation was caused by 2 swift swoop by Whitey. For just a second Peter could see only Whitey. His broad wings hid Jumper completely. It looked as if this time he had caught Jumper. Then a white form shot out to one side. It was Jumper. Just in the very nick of time he had dodged. Vhitey's great wings brushed the snow. With wonderful quickness he had turned and was after Jumper again, And now Peter saw such running as he had never seen before. Jumper was headed for a little thicket of small hem- lock trees crowded so close together that once beneath their spreading branches he would be safe. But it was quite a L lJrMPER W WITHIN O JUMP OF THAT LITTI ance away. Would he be able to make it Would he? One instant Peter was sure he would and the next he was sure he wouldn't. He held his breath. And with all his might he hoped Jumper would reach that place of safety. If wishes could have given Jumper greater Speed Peter’s wishes would have given it to him, Whitey the Snowy Owl saw just what | Jumper was trving for and he himself ‘( 1 his very best in the way of flving. i He was hungry. He was very hungry. | He couldn’t recall ever being hungrier than he s right then. And there in front of him was a splendid dinner, the j finest kind of a dinner. But if Jumper ached that thicket of younz hemlock he, Whitey, would have to look linner, and he didn't know where 1o look, for these were hard vithin one long jump of little thi Whitey shot for- nd down with his great claws | reaching for Jumper. From where Peter t it looked as if this time he surely would catch Jumper. “Oh, dear!" cri Peter. And then Whitey turned sudden- |1y and alighted on a stump on the very tedge of that little thicket and glared down trying to_see under those protect- | that ward ing branches. Jumgpr was safe!
