BONDS ARE ACTIVE, PRIGES STRONGER Allotment of Bell Telephone 5s About 30 Per Cent. Libertys Again Higher. NEW YORK, January 15—Today's bond market was active and strong. with further advances in numerous individual issues. Liberty bonds were slightly higher, with the exception of the victory loan, which was off a tri- fle. Foreign governments were not much changed. from yesterday, but they held their recent improvement. In railway bonds there were several features. One was the strength in KEansas City, Fort Scott and Memphis 4s. which were up from 65% to 66, Another was the rise of over a point in Baltimore and Ohio 6s, which sold at 931, as against 92 yesterday. It became known that the recent of- fering of Northwestern Bell Ttlephone 78 had been so heavily oversubscribed that participants in the loan received only 30 per cent of their allotment Westinghouse Electric were very active, with a further rise to 93. LOOK FOR BRISK REVIVAL IN THE COPPER INDUSTRY NEW YORK. January 15 that the copper i the export trade, a brisk revival within the next few months, if loans now under negotia- tion between American bankers and various European countries reach the final stage, is expressed here in trade circles. Switzerland and Italy, countries which are especially handicapped by reason of their lack of coal contem- plate enormous purchases of copper here in furtherance of governmental Pplans to harness their vast water re- Sources. Germany, which is sending large quantities of her coal to France un- der the terms of the peace treaty, 1go is in the market for large quan- ties of copper. in addition to the heavy toll in c which Germany has to pav to France, German _industrial interests which always have been prominent in manufacture of electrical applian also will buy extensively of American copper once their credits here are re- established. Belgium and most of the new coun- tries of central and eastern Europe are reported to be contracting in this market for supplies of copper, that metal entering largely into the up- building of their railways and many industries. It is estimated that the present sur- plus of copper here approximates 750,000,000 pounds, of Wwhich more than half will likely be taken for foreign use. < al ‘WOOL DEMAND MODEST.
