Smeeden Removed to the Hospital Thin Afternoon. An a@ditional case of smallpox was re- ported to the health officer this. morning, the afflicted person being John R. Smeeden, a white man, residing at 454 Massachusetts avenue. Mr. Smeeden.is said to be an in- surance man, belng employed, it is stated, by one of the industrial insurance com- pantes in business. here. He was removed to the smallpox hospital this afternoon. The house in’ which he lived is said to be occupied by ten or fifteen other persons, some of whom, the health officer is in- formed, are employed in the government departments and others in local stores, The house will be thoroughly disinfected and quarantined, and it is probable that most of the inmates will be removed to the de- tention camp, and there kept for the usual period of sixteen days. The history of the case has not yet been learned by the health officer, but it ts be- Neved the patient contracted the disease in making collections throughout the city. ‘There are six patients now in the District smallpox hospital, and all of them are re- ported to be progressing well toward re- covery. —— DEMURRER SUSTAINED. Investigation Cohcerning the Death of Colored Infant. Coroner Carr held an Inquest this after- noon at the sixth precinct station to ascer- tain the facts attending the death of an in- fant belonging to Frances Lee, colored, who lived at 835 2d street southeast. As pub- shed in Tuesday's Star, the young woman called at Freedmen’s Hospital Sunday and the doctors refused to admit her because she was unable to comply with the rules of the institution. She went home and that night her child was born. Monday she re- turned to the hospital, and when the doc- tors heard her story, to the effect that the child had dropped into the sewer at her home, the case was reported to the police. Detectives Parham and Gallaher made an Investigation and found the body of the child in an outhouse several doors from where the woman lived.
