The democrats are trying to make votes for Johnston by asserting that Mr. Edwards has: never yet publicly denied a report that he proposed, if elected, to have removed the postmasters In his district who were ap- pointed through the influence of Represent- ative Dorr, although he has, they say, sev- eral times been challenged to do so, und they assert that he contented himself wiin saying that he had not threatened to do so; but when pressed with the question whether the would retain them in office he failed to answer. As-a result the democratic managers charge that Mr. Edwards is playing a double game with the postmasters and chose who desire to be such. They allege that to those in office he says he has not threaten- ed to turn them out if elected, while to those Whbd want to be postmasters ne inti- mates, “Just wait until after 1 am elected, and I will show these Dorr handlers ofJet- ters a trick or two.” This, the- democrats declare, is in line with the policy pursued by Mr.Dorr previous to his defeat by Mr. Edwards. n is practically no opposition, but in the twe Pearce, republican, and present memb: having a good deal of trouble with tae ne- groes, who are strong in numbers and are running an independent candidate. It is generally conceded that Mr. Barthold, re- publican, will go back to Washington from the thirteenth, as the opposition to him is not Mrong enough to be effective. Eleventh District. There is a warm contest In the eleventh district between Mr. Joy, the present re- publican member of the House, and former Mayor Noonan of St. Louis. Both candi- dates are very popular, but Noonan is con- sidered the better campaigner, and the result is believed to be doubtful. There are two judges of the state su- preme court to be elected. The democratic nominees are William C, Marshall and Le- roy B. Valiant, both of whom are now on the bench. The former has been a mem- ber of the court for several years, and upon the death of the late Judge Mc- Farlané was made presiding judge. Mr. Valiant was eppointed to fill the vacancy caused by the promotion of Judge Marshall. The latter has been nominated for the long term of ten years, and Mr. Valiant for the unexpired term of Mr. Marshall. Both those named are from the city of St. Louts, both came originally from Mis- sissippi and both seryed throughout the war in the confederate’ army. The repub- lican nominees for the positions are Judge Finklinburg of St. Louis and Judge Higby of Schuyler county. “It is believed that the democratic nominees will be successful, For the office of superintendent of pub- lic instruction the nominee on the repub- lican side 1s J. W. Kirk, the incumbent, and Wiiliam Carrington of Greene county, democrat. Kirk defeated Carrington for the place in 18% by a couple of hundred votes, and Mr. Carrington is confident this time that he will be able to overcome that majority and be elected. In some of the democratic counties the republicans and middle-of-the-road popu: Mists have fused on candidates for the legis lature, and in those counties cl as republican, but where the vote is close, the democrats and liberal populists have fused for the same offices. —_—_.——_ Horse Runs Away.
