WILLETT, Postmaster. 4 The Churches and the People. From the New York Times. Dr. De Costa’s statement of facts con- cerning the religious life of this nation is of a nature to give occasion for grave ecncern to churchmen. Only two-sevenths of the people of the United States, it ap- pears, are church members. There are fifty millions outside the church. Dr. De Costa thinks this is an appalling evidence of the spread of trreligion in the land. It seems to us that it is an evidence of the failure of religicn to spread among the people. Irreligion, if we take the word to |, Irean non-membership in the church, is doubtless prevalent. The figures show 1t. But if we take it to mean godlessness and depravity it does not prevail in this coun- try, it is not spreading, and gives little o casion for alarm and foreboding. ‘ The ordinary laws of morality and right corduct Independent of church authority or the immediate injunctions of religious teachers appear to be very widely respected and obeyed in the United States. They are sufficient te keep the fifty million non-} members of churches about as near to the peth of righteousness as the twenty million church members. This reflection might come pretty near to destroying the churcres by proving that they were not ry were {t not for one very import- ant fact which must be kept cleariy in view. Public opinion in this country 1s almost puritanical in its stern and just condemnation of vice and immorality. Fear of public opinion keeps millions of persons in the right path who would be tempted beyond their strength if they could sin without losing the respect of their neigh- bors. But the churches have a vast, in- calculable influence in shaping public opin- n, in keeping it up to moral pitch, and preventing any permanent debasement of the standards of right in communities. The saving power of the churches is by no means Itmited to their membership. There are vey few, and those only the irredeem-, able profligates, who altogether escape their uplifting iufluence. , It may be true that the masses of the pecple are coming no nearer to the church, but It is not true that they are drifting further away from practical righteousness, that is, from the standard of right conduct in the daily affairs of life. Nor is it true that they are becoming any more indiffer- ent to moral restraints than they have al- ways been. The morality of the people is not decaying or degenerating. Nevertheless, the earnest church worker may well have his moments of discourage- ment. If the direct appeal of the church is heeded by only two in seven of the peo- ple he may conclude that there is some-_ thing the matter either with the people or with the church.
