Congress Allows an Extension West of Rock Cree! It will be possible now for residents west of Rock creek to have an electric light serv- ice if it is desired, One of the last measures which was enacted into a law at the ses- sion of Congress just closed was a joint res- olution giving the Commissioners of the District authority “to issue permits to ex- isting electric light companies in the I trict for the extension of existing overhead electric wires outside the fire limits ¢ west of Rock creek to be used for lighting purposes only.” While there fs an clectr light rvice in that se under existing Jaw it could not be ex and so il was not possible to run when there nand for a new service. fon to the per n to exte i that tion a ciause f the I that was pai gener: the late s of ess legalized existing light conduits within tt fire limit i all overhead wires without the fire limits. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. WARRENTON, Va., July 11, 1895. The excessive heat that prevalied last week is now @ thing of the past, and so- Journers here are enjoying the most de- lightfully cool weather. The Star is eager- ly hailed by many anxious to hear news of the far-away soldier boys, and their won- erful bravery. The town is enthusiastic ever the victories gained by Schley, Samp- son and Shafter. The rector of St. James’ Episcopal Church yesterday held thanks- giving services, as requested by the Presi- dent. A large audience filled the church. Card parties and picnics have helped to while sway the time. Among those who entertained was Miss Kerr of Washington. Her father, Dr. Kerr, has leased Conway Grove, and will be here for the season. Mr. Pearce of Massachusetts avenue has rented the handsome residence of the late Mrs. Rice-Payne, and will be here for the summer and autumn. Many friends from Washington enjoyed the hospitalities of Mrs. and the Misses Pearce on the 4th. Mr. R. N. Brooke is often seen during the summer at his old home. Miss L. R. Meetze, a member of the Art League, is home for a much-needed rest after her winter's work. Among the recent arrivals here are Mrs. James Keith, wife of Judge Keith of the court of appeals, Richmond; Mrs. Semmes and family of New Orleans. Mr. Joe Sem- mes, paymaster in the navy, is on leave of ebsence, and is here for a short time. The Dramatic Club will give one of its plays in the near future. Among those who have said they would assist in the production are Mr. Felix Mahoney of The Star ané Mr. Mills Thompson. The play will be under the management of Mrs. C, Marshall, Mrs. Gains and other members of the Bowling Alley Club. A leac'ag young doctor went to Washing- ton on a prospecting tour recently, and was successful in securing a position aboard the hospital ship Relief, and this summer Dr. John Hicks, jr., will be in Cuba. Mr. Jack Barnard, at one time one of New York's swell beaux, now of this place, enlisted as private in the Rough Riders for the war in Cuba. His work just now is acting stable boy. He has the care of fif- teen or more horses. This is only one of the thousands of nis class who endure sim- ilar hardships and who accept them so Lravely for the love of their glorious coun- ty. —-—— N. E.
