COLUMBUS, Ohio, June 8, 1898, Very little interest seems be taken fh the republican state convention which will be held here Jun It is belfeved that its every act nas been discounted. The anti- Hanna republicans say they do not pro- pose to take any part in the convention, and they are, ro doubt, telling the truth. In fact, it is so plain that the friends of Senator Hanna and the national adminis- tration have control of the party machine that to attempt to wrest it from them at this time would be to undertake what could only result Jn discomfiture and defeat Senator Hanna has already been chosen by the state central cémmittce as tempo- rary chairman of the convention, and he will, no doubt, be continued the perma- Rent presiding officer. The platform will reaffirm the platform of the party adopt- ed at the St. the Louis convention and indor conduct of the civil and military rs of the country under the administra- n of President McKinley. It wili also rontain a clause indorsing the official acts of Senator Hanna and Senator Foraker. WILL Meet No Opposition. It is believed that no opposition will be made to any of these propositions. In the interest of party harmony the Hanna re publicans will not omit to honor Senator Foraker, and, seeing that they could not prevent it, the anti-Hanna republicans wiil not attempt opposition to the resolution in- dorsing Senator Hanna. Charles L. Kurtz leaves next week for Arizona, to be absent from the state ail summer. To The Star correspondent he sald that he had counseled all his friends to take no uctive steps in opposition to Sena- tor Hanna at this time. believe,” said he, “that the best way to retire Senator Hanna from leadership in the party ts to let him have full and undisputed sway for a while. The more the rank and file of the party see of him and his way of running politics the less they will think of him as a 1 his retirement will come ntaneousiy. Mr. Kurtz would not admit that opposi- m to Se or Hanna would be useless at this time. “I could sit down now,” sald he, “and start the telephone and telegra wires working and in a short time have a movernent on foot that would surel set the plans of Senator Hanna friends in the coming convention, but as I say, I think we can accomplish our end in a better way and without a fight.” It is re 4 that Mayor McKi: Ss sure to control the delegat sent county, activity there it has been a general anti-Hanna me as be set going all over the state looking to the capture of the convention. It is evident, though, that Mayor Me- Kisson fs only doing this to keep his forces together, and thus preserve his political power there. His own future su politics depends upon this. Foraker'’s Friends Want Re: It is not unlikely that the Fe tion will make a fight here and there in the congressional district meetings for the purpose of getting a foothold in the new state central committee. In the present state central committee that faction has not a single member, and the fact puts them at a great disadvantage. It is likely that they will secure a few of the members of the new committee. It is safe to pi dict, however, that Senator Hanna will choose the new state executive gammiitee chairman. Philo S. Clark of Scioto count: be slated for the place, but there is some doubt as to his availability, as he has just been appointed postmaster at Portsmouth, As to the candidates, there is room for speculation in only one case. Secretary of State Charles Kinney will be nominated for a second term. So will William T. Spear, judge of the supreme court; J. E. Biac is said to burn, state food commissioner, and J.
