From the Philadelphia Times. An old civil war veteran tells a good story of how a lazy private in his regi- went was cured of shirking. It appears that the fellow was utterly no good. He had been drafted into service, and there- after devoted his whole time and atten- tion to getting cut of it. He spent more | than half of bis time in the hospital tent. He ran the gamut of all the diseases that flesh is heir to or has acquired through its own misguided efforts. Somehow even the severity of military discipline was in- adequate to his case; shirk he could and would, One day the regiment was ordered to bat- tle. There was to be a long, hard march and a fierce conflict at the end of it. When the orders came the shirker collapsed. He was taken to an ambulance, ‘where he lay apparently in a comatose condition, hear- ing nething, heeding nothing. The surgeon, a new officer just appointed on tne staff, was sent for to see him. The physician chanced to be a keen-witted man, and af- ter taking In the situation he bandaged the fellow's eyes, motioned to a private to take his feet. while he himself took the head, and without more ado dumped the comatose shirker head-foremost into the river. As it was the dead of winter, with ice blocks clogging the water, a more vio- lent remedy could not be imagined and the way the fellow swam to shore was a caution. From that day forth he was never known to try his game of shirk again, Omaha. Mr. Lemon selected the subject for his figure from Faust, and represents Marguerite musing over the stranger that she has seen at church in the morning. The sculptor has chosen the moment when, according to Bayard Taylor's translation, Marguerite says: “I'd something give cculd I but say Who was that gentleman today.” The head is bent forward in a graceful attitude suggestive of thought, and the pensive expression-in the delicately mod- eled features is well rendered. The drapery which sweeps down in long, effective folds on the right-hand side helps to give digni- ty and grace to the figure. Mr. Lemon studied here for a time at the Corcoran Art School, and has revisited the city often enough-since then to keep in touch with the artistic interests of Washington and to feel that he is still a member of the circle of painters and sculptors in the national capital. F x * There is now on view at Veerhoff’s a col- lection of old engravings printed both from wooden blocks and steel plates, being for the most part reproductions of famous paintings. Desnoyers’ engraving of Raphael's Madonna de la Sedia is an es- pecially fine example of delicate line work, and Rubens’ “Descent from the Cro: and paintings by Guido Reni and Carlo Doici are also reproduced by satisfactory plates. Several of Piranesi’s well-known architectural subsecte are also on view. * * The art department of the Columbian University fills a larger sphere of useful- ness every season, and the new departure in the way of architectural drafting makes a successful showing this year. There are now on exhibition a number of wash draw- ings which show the artistic possibilities of that work, and bear evidence of the prog- Tess that the students have made in a sin- gle year’s study. One of the most effective contributions is Mr. W. L. Webster's per- spective elevation of a design for a belve- dere, the drawing being executed in a full scale of colors. Mr. J. A. Thompson shows some clever work along the same line, and Mr. A. B. Brown exhibits an artistic pen drawing of an old doorway. The summer school of the Columbian University will closing a switch. At Fort Hamilton, for instance, the mine wires all terminate in a bomb proof chamber in which the opera- tor is located. Considerable trouble has been experienced in keeping intact the electrical connections owing to the caretessness of friendly ves- sels breaking the connections in passing in and out. A narrow channel has, however, been lately marked out which outgoing and incoming vessels are obliged to take or run the risk of being fired upon by govern- men patrol boats. It is absolutely essen- tial that ships should keep to this channel, as the continual Breaking of the electrical mine connections 1s not only a serious but likewise costly matfer. {Trained eleetricians are required to Keep ‘these mine connec- tions in working (tder, and it is therefore essential that the govérnment should have in its employ a fgrgé, number of trained engineers. At thé present time the steps that are being taken toward the forma- tion of several el 1 goverrment corps are to be commende s Lieutenant Fiske correctly prophesied sgveral years ago, the immediate employment of such corps’ will be in the torped defgnse of the harbors, and the services oP meh accustomed to dif ficult electrical wérk a%id familiar with the latest methods wilisbe 4f incalculable value. The firing of tyre submarine mines at the electrical exhibition by the Mar- ccni method has Brought up the question as to whether it woul not be possible to fire a harbor mine by/means of Hertzian Waves in the same manner and thus do away with the present Complicated system of wiring. In the opinion of Mr. Clark, the well-known electrical expert in wifWess telegraphy, this could be accomplished in spite of the fact that a large body of salt water, being a good conductor, might act as a shield to the coherer and obstruct the passage of the electric waves in the same manner that a mass of metal would. To overcome this difficulty Mr. Clark suggests running a wire frcm the receiving appara- tus to the surface of the water and thus furnish a path of little resistance to the coherer. To prevent all the mines in a warbor from being discharged simultane- ously by the electric waves it would be necessary to have a large number of trans- mitters, each differently tuned or in step ith its special ‘coherer at a certain mine. ‘or this reason it may be some time before the wireless apparatus is adopted for this use. x : John Berry, Benj Berry, RB Bingham, H © Birchow, Walter Blanchard, Geo R Bliss, Dr © C Boland, An Bonner, it B Bord, Louis Bottler, Jno Bewle, Lee Boyce.
