10 THE EVENING STAR, TUESDAY, APRIL 19, 1898-12 PAGES. TO COMMAND PATROL FLEET. Commodore Howell Assigned to a New Duty. Secretary Long has assigned Commodore J. A. Howell to command the newly or- ganized patrol fleet, consisting of the Yo- semite, the Prairie, Dixie. This detail of Commodore Howell ts a solution for a difficuity which has been confronting the department ever since his return from the European station. Secre- tary Long was very anxious to avail him- self of the experience of Commodore How- ell, but found some difficulty in doing so in view of the fact that he outranked both Commodore Schley and Captain Sampson, in command of the two fleets. It is proba- ble that the San Francisco will be retained by Commodore Howell as his fingship, thus materially increasing the strength of etary Long has selected new names for recent aditions to the navy. The At- lJantic liner New York has been named the Harvard and the Paris has been named the Yale. The names of the other two Ameri- can liners, the St. Paul and the St. Louis, remain unchanged. Two other vessels re- ceived new names yesterday. The Yumurt becomes the Badger, the Yorktown be- comes the Resolute and the Venezuela be- comes the Panther. Superintendent Kimball of the life sav- ing service and the officials of the Navy Department are arranging a signal system for reporting the movements of naval ves- sels along the Atlantic coast through th: Ife saving stations and their telephone connections. a0 Se Moret Says Come and Get Cuba. Lz Journal of Paris publishes an inter- view which its Madrid correspondent haz had with Senor Moret, the Spanish minister ef the colonies, in the course of which Senor Moret said: “Spain has made all the concessions com- patible with honor. If McKinley wants Cuba let him come and tak2 it. We can do and say nothing more. ——_-+e+_____ AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &c. Today. Walter B.
