The regular semi-monthly meeting of the city council was held last night. Owing to the demonstration in Washington, incident to the serenade to Gen. Fitzhugh Lee. there ‘was but a small attendance. None of the matters of public importance which have been agitating the minds of the people for some weeks past was acted upon. It was” hoped that the matter of repaving King street from Fairfax street to Royal street with some up-to-date paving mate- rial would be dtsposed of, but the question did not come up. When the councti was called to order Councilman John H. Greene of the third ward moved that the body adjourn so as to allow such members as desired to do s0 to go to Washington and take part in the Lee serenade. The vote on the motion was atie. In this report there appeors to be an acditional shortage between June 1, 1895, and May 81, 1807, of $4,347.49. This report caused considerable discussion in both branches of council. H.) offered an amendment, pro- viding that no portion of the sum author- ized to be used for plate printing should be used for any printing of notes, bonds, checks or internal reyenue stamps ot than for printing from hand-roller presses. This precipitated a jong discussion of a question which has been before Congress for years—the question of the use of hand and steam presses in the bureau of engrav- ing and printing. Mr. Gallinger, Mr. Haw- ley (Conn.), Mr. Kyle (8. D.), Mr. Cannon (Utah) and Mr. Pasco (Fla.) supported the amendment, the principal argument being that the necessary fine work could not be done by steam presses. Mr. Allison, in charge of the bill, made an extended statement of the situation im the bureau of engraving and printing. He said that there was not now on hand a thirty days’ supply of currency notes, in- ternal revenue stamps and postage stamps.
