14 THE EVENING STAR, MONDAY, APRIL 11, 1898-16 PAGES. ALEXANDRIA AFFAIRS ——— Thousands of Citizens Visit the Italian Schoolship Amerigo Vespucci. GREAT CONSIDERATION SHOWN THEN + Some Clever Detective Work Dis- ses Stolen Property. > AND GENERAL PERSONAL King Street, Telephone Ws. . April 11. 1898, Bell ANDRIA Fully 18,00) people visited this ci terday to take a look at the Itali: ing ship, Amerigo Ves Fa and every boat ying to t city from Washington brought hundr.ds. From early in the morning until dark the shore op- pesite where the ship is anchored was crowded with peop’e. All Cay long smal craft of all kinds were brought into requi- sition to take visitors out to the ship, and many thousands tock advantage of the opportunity thus afforded. Commander Goetand was unti g in his efforts to have all who boarded his ship treated with every possible courte The ship was literally turned over to the v itors. Those officers of the vessel who did not go to Washington remained aboard sbip to show the callers about, and the jolly tars also tock a hand in making it Pleasant for those who were on a visit of inspection. Ail through the day sailors from the ship could be seen about town, and many cf them took advantage of shore leave to visit Washington. A party of officers came ashore early yes- terday mcrning to get copies of The Star ef Saturday afternocn. They called at The Star bureau for this purpose. It was no- ticeable that members of the party had Pinned to the lapels of their coats buttons with “Old Glory,” and an emblem of “Free Cuba” hung to streamers cf red, white and blue. Whether this was diplomacy or a show of pleasure at the attitude of “Uncle Sam" could not be learned. Visitors are allowed on the ship from 2 o’cleck in the afternoon until sundown, and again today many people have availed themselves of the privilege. It was amus- ing to see the sailors dividing their ration of wine with scme of the visitors, who Were appzrently accustomed to beer. Al- thouch it was light Itallan wine, it had the effect of “wheeis in ze head,” as one of the sailors expressed it. Several Alexan- drians who are Masons were gratified to find one of their fraternity aboard the Ves- uccl, and a jolly good time followed the discovery. Suspicious Character Arrested. Shortly after 6 o'clock this morning a t2lephone message was received at police headquarters asking that an officer be sent 3o the Southern railway depot to meet train No. 38 and arrest a suspicious character. The request was made on account of a tele- gram from Mr. J. M. Gregg, conductor of the tr When the train arrived at the Station Conductor Gregg pointed out the Iman and Officer Roberts, who had respond- €1 to the call, placed him under arrest. He as taken to police headquarters, where he y+ his name as Jerome Jones. The suspect carried a very nice-looking hand satchel. When it was searched by the ehbief cf police it was found to contain @bout S$» worth of new clothes, which were four pairs of tro a@ifferent sizes. Th> clothes bore the name M. Strong & Co., Greensboro, N. C. Upon Papers found on his person the name Mun- Foe Johnson appeared several times, and this is thought to be his correct name. Jones, or Jonrsor, claims that he coms from “harlotte, N.C. and that he bought the clothes from a colored boy for $3. He was committed to jail to await further ex- amination, and the authorities at Greens- bero’, N. C., were telegraphed in regard to the matter. lever Detective Work. Fer a number cf months past articles of Gifferent kinds kave been missed from the treight cars on the side tracks of the Penn- sylvania rallroad in this city, and it has been almost imporsible to locate the taief or thieves. Sergt. Jams T. Smith and Off- cer Knight have been working on the cas2 for some time and have at last succeeded in locating « great deal of the stolen Prop2rty, and they are of the opinion that within a very short while they can ave the man behind the bars, if it is the desire of the agent of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company in this cliy to prosecute the case. Ii is believed the good work of these two officers will place a check on the thieving operations of the gang. The name of the person who is at the head of this band is pretty well known by some few, and should his arrest follow somewnat of a sensation will be caused. A Dastardly Act. It has just leaked out that a few days ago sore miscreant emptied a lot of car- Lolic actu into the receptacles for “holy water” in S: Mary's” Roman Catholic Church. The ocor of the acid was detected by persens entering the church, and it was discovered that nearly every one of the vessels contained the deadly acid. The rector of the church was notified and a quiet investigation {s being conducted. A good clue to the perpetrator of this fiend- ish act, who, by the way, is believed to be @ woman, was furnished by two children who happened to be in the church when it is said to have occurred. “Crap Shooters” Fined. Officers Knight and Bettis raided the res- idence of Samuel Gary on “Vinegar Hill” last night and arrested Sam Gary, William Lyles, James Lair and William Saunders, who were engaged in a game of crap. The officers as “hey were parsing the house heard the familiar sounds of “Come, seven, come ‘leven, “Little Joe and Big’ Dick,” and at once prepared for the capture. The players were so taken up with the game that the officers effected an entrance before the men could get away. They were fined $3 each in the police court this morning. Police Court. In the Police Court today Mayor Simpson fined William Epps, colored, $5, or, in lieu thereof, thirty days in the workhouse, for petit larceny; George Atkins and James Baker, $2.50 each for disorderly conduct; Isaac Ferguson, $250 for disorderly con- duct; Meivina Swallow, disorderly conduct, dismissed. The case of James and Peter Constantinople, charged with an assault on Mr. John Mills, was dismissed, the warrant having been withcrawn. Hannah Beale was fined $2.50 for disorderly conduct. Richard Burnett, charged with selling liquor on Sun- day and without a license, was dismissed for want of evidence. Easter Sunday. “The Lord has risen from the dead” was the subject of the sermons preached in the various churches yesterday and the con- gregations were exceptionally large. The elaborate musical programs published in The Star of Saturday were carried out, without exception. Holy communion was celebrated in Christ, Grace and St. Paul's Episcopal churches. At the Second Presbyterian Church, Rev. J. E. Thacker preached on “The Seven- fold Easter Jo: Wednesday next Rev. ‘Thacker and Elder K. Church South will deliver a special sermon to the Epworth Leaguers, and that night the league will conduct special services in the church. ‘The shower immediately after service yesterday morning prevented the usual Easter Sunday parade of new gowns and bonnets, but in the afternoon they were out in ali their glory. - Death of Mrs. Wenzel.
