Many members of the craft have been re- eipients of the “generous hospitality” of this subordinate body in times gone by, and still persist in accepting every opportunity to Jock in on the “past,” knowing full well that “for ways that are dark and mortals that ars slain, Mt. Horeb is pecullar.” ‘This chapter {s also a particularly unique organization, in that it perfectly practices silence and secrecy, and the poor, unsu3- pecting novitiate, “and others,” are fiat- tered and encouraged by honeyed eu- phemisms to atcept apparent kind atten- tions and even “gifts,”” until the calciura is turned on in full, and the actual circem- stances translated. At about 7 o'clock every Wednesday evening an observer at 17th street and Pennsylvania avenue wil! notice the “sons of the desert” In deep and scheming medi- tation, quietiy gathering from all direc- tions and trending toward the rooms of Ferd. Gawler. About three" hours later these same “sons’’ will be seen as quietly dispersing, witnout.leaving a vestige of the intent and purpose of their rendezvous. It has leaked out, however, that they pro- pose holding a high class entertainment every night, beth in their booth and the extra room they have been compelled to obtain in tae annex. The program will be slightly varied each evening, and a small admission fee charged. As a partial restitution for any imagined injury to very delicate feelings, a novel souvenir will-be given each patron. They have also procured the most costly and handsome Eastern Star pin in the jurisdic- tion, and many vote books pertaining to the same are now in circulation. The fair ones of this order will ambitiously contest the award of this beautiful ornament, and to increase the interest already displayed a second “pin” of less value, donated by # member of Mount Horeb, will be given as a consolation prize. Both pins w.i be placed on exhibition at an early date and @s soon as arrangements can be made with this end in view.
