FULLY REALIZES HI coNDImon’ Prince of Wales js Learning ‘to Ride the: Bicycle, “JOHNNIES” HAVE NEW FAD (Copyright, 1898, by Associated Press.) LONDON, March 26.—Next to the proba- bilities of wars, the public is most keenly interested in the condition of Mr. Glad- stone, though not permitted to know how ill he is. Perhaps it should be said he is not so much ill as that his powers are failing and that he is apparently sinking urder the weight of years and vital ex- haustion. The best informed people admit that amendment of his ailment is impossi- ble, and that his physicians only hope to alleviate the pain he is suffering. The Lancet says, on the subject of the surgical advice called in: “This can scarcely be interpreted other- wise than that there is ‘serious cause for the symptoms from which he has suffered for nine months. At his great age the gravity of any surgical ailment is apparent, and the exhaustion, In consequence, is prolonged. The severe neuralgia is in itself an unfavorable feature. His vitality, how- ever, is wonderful, and his general health is good.” An examination of the patient with the use of the Roentgen rays disclosed inflamed cartilage; but there was no sign of cancer. Bids Farewell to Friends. Although inquiries for press paragraphs are strictly kept from Mr. Gladstone, it is said he has bid farewell to several old friends, and knows his eid is. approaching. Referring to his illness, Mr. Gladstone said to a friend: “A firal lesson—a final trial.” The old statesman has been sensibly hap- pier at Hawarden than at the Riviera or Bournemouth. A painful incident of Mr. Gladstone’s ill- ness has been his bombardment by unin- vited spiritual advisers. Not a mail reaches his residence without containing a shower of chapters of the Old or New Testaments, extracts from the lives of scriptural per- sonages, or Isolated texts, hymns, poems, ete. Irish Local Government Blii. It appears after all that there is little heart in tne Irish landlords’ opposition to the local government bill, The majority of them cordially dislike many of the pro- visions of the measure; but there is too much division in their ranks in regard to the advisability of open hostility to allow making a vigorous fight. The govern- ment is fairly confident of passing the bill before Whitsuntide. The measure has un- ccubtedly further accentuated the differ- erces among the Irish leaders, who have been described by Mr.’ Augustine Birrell, home ruler, member of parliament for the west division of Fife, as ‘men who sit scowling at one another }{ke third-rate tragedians.” tg aoa The liberals are inclined to take a serlous view of the exaggerated eulogy of the ccnservative administration which Mr. Timothy_M. Healy indulged in during the second reading of the bill, which they con- sider as done with theJopgect of discredit- ing the leadership of-Mr/ John Dillon, and to convince his countr¥men that he is as equally independent of liberal support as Mr. John Redmond. Est ; Wales Learns to Bide. _ The Prince of Wales is energetically learning bicycle riding ut ‘the Riviera, ac- companied by an instructor and an equerry. A curious effect of hard cycling is re- perted trom France. Out of the last batch of conscripts no fewer than eight widely known cyclists were rejected as being phy- sically incapable of military duty. Dis- cases of the heart were the chief reasons for their rejection. This causes profound astonishment, all classes thinking them at least fit to be accepted as military cyclists. Ensign Chandler of the United States cruiser San Francisco had an amusing ex- perience on his way to Gravesend. He was in Madrid when the San Francisco sudden- ly started for England, and he was obliged to go to Paris and from there to Dover, where he was recognized by two Scotland Yard detectives as answering the descrip- tion of a man wanted for forgery. They shadowed the ensign to Gravesend, and were only convinccd of their error when reaching the ship. Mr. Chandler supposed he was being watched by the British gov- errment. Lady Castleross headed the list of the newly elected Killarney poor law guardians. She was nominated by her father-in-law, the Earl of Kenmare. Her appearance in this role has aroused the greatest interest in Ireland's titled claeses and poor, who hope that if members of the aristocracy take up such duties greater measures of re- lef of the distressed will follow. “Johnnies’” New Fad. The recent bitter winter weather has preduced @ new fashion, the smartest “Johnnies” eppearing in short fur capes over their overcoats, thereby causing much amusement and chaffing. The French line steamer La Bretagne, which sails from Havre today, takes 100 carrier pigeons, with the view of testing the possibility of establishing communtica- tion with the shore, in case of accident. If the experiment is successful, all steamers of the French line will hereafter carry Pigeons. The experiment ts viewed with great interest, though skeptically, ee Fatima on Canvas. There is on exhibition at 1411 Pennsyl- vania avenue Phil. K. Clover’s famous painting, “Fatima,” and during the time it has been in this city it has been visited by a large number of art critics and lovers of the beautiful. The artist has been success- ful in painting the perfect figure of a beau- tiful woman as nature made her, and his Grawing and coloring have received warm admiration. All the surroundings are artls- tically brought out and the whole picture is @ masterpiece. The ladies’ afternoons are Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the attend- ance then is very large. It will remain on exhibition another week, and perhaps longer. on Sult for Damages on Trial. ‘Hearing is in progress before Judge Bradley and a jury, in Criminal Court No. 2, transacting civil business, of the suit-at- jaw instituted by Israe} itzer against Semuel Friedlander, to recover damages in the sum of $25,000. 37 Spitzer claims that Friegienger cauged him to be arrested and cha with the em- bezziement of $13, whileshe fas in the em- ploy of Friedlander as clerk. Spitzer was indicted by the fury and tried in the Criminal Court. The jury, how- ever, returned a verdictof not guilty. Messrs. C. M. Smith and E. Forrest ap- pear as counsel for Spitzer, |}while Messrs. J. J. Darlington and Trac; Jeffords rep- resent Friedlander. HH Ex-Senator Blackburn Better. ‘The numerous ladies and gentlemen who called at the Wellington Hotel today to inquire about ex-Senator Joseph C. 8. Tdrpedo Boat Bought Abroad. ‘The Navy Department was informed by cablegram from Lieutenant Colwell, naval attache to the United States embassy at London, that agents of this government had purchased a “Schischau” torpedo boat that had been constructed for the Ger- man government. The new acquisition is of the general type of German torpedo boats, and is regarded as a valuable addi- tion to our navy. One feature regarding her that affords special gratification to the rapid-fire guns. - Many Other Purchases. 5 Four swift yachts, nine fast sea-going trgs and one coasting vessel were ac- quired yesterday to augment the United States navy. The tugs will be used as dispateh boats, scouts and supply boats. The Columbia, the Hermione and the P. H. Wise are already at the navy yard, and the others will arrive in a day or_two. Boats which will probably be purchased are M. C. D. Borden’s yacht, the Sover- eign, and the tugs Ocean King and James A. Lawrence. John Jacob Astor's Nour- mahal may also be purchased very soon.
