Reietets Death of General Veazey, War Vet- eran and Statesman. PROMINENT IN LIFE AND POPULAR Was Once a Member of Interstate Commerce Commission. SKETCH OF HIS CAREER ees ‘The death of Gen. Wheelock Graves Veaz formerly interstate commerce commissioner, took place last night shortly before 8 o'clock, at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Clifford S. Walton, with whom he lived, at 1731 P street northwest. Gen. Veazey had been in bad health for mere than three years. He first suffered frem a slight stroke of apoplexy. After his recovery from this he tock a European trip to regain his health. Only during the Fast few weeks had his condition been se- ous. Soon after Gen. Veazey’s return from Europe he sustained another stroke of lexy, More severe than the first. This d him to resign the office of inter- state commerce commissioner, in December, 1895, just after President Cleveland had ap- pointed him for a second term. Since then he has lived quietly in Washington. Veazey was confined to his bed about two weeks ago, as the result of his previous attack, since which time his re- covery has not been expected. His wife, son and daughter were present when the end came. 4il arrangements for the funeral have not been completed, but it will most likely t place from Epiphany Church at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon. Members of the interstate commerce commission and of the G. A. R. will_act as active and hoorary pallbearers. Tae G. A. R. men who were aids on Gen. Veazey’s staff are requested to meet at the G. A. R headquarters to- mcrrow evening at 7:30 o'clock. Native of New Hampshire. Gen. Veazey was born December 5, 1835, in Rockingham county, New Hampshire, and there passed his early childhood. He educated at Phillips Exeter Academy, graduated at Dartmouth College, and later at the Albany Law School. In 1860 he was admitted to the bar in Vermont and was engaged in the practice of the law in Windsor county when the civil war broke out. He enlisted early in the 3d Vermont Regiment, was made captain of Company A, and in the summer of- 1861 was pro- moted to major and then to lieutenant colonel. The regiment was commanded by Col. W. F. Smith, cod was engaged im the first peninsular battle under McClellan, in 1862, at Lee’s Mills, and subsequently in all the €tgagements of that campaign. For part of that time Gen. Veazey was chief of Gen. Smith's staff, but was promoted to the colonelcy of the 16th Vermcnt Regiment in 1862, commanding that regiment at the bat- tle of Gettysburg and throughout its term of service. This regiment was rt of Stannard’s Vermont Brigade at Gettys- burg, and made the famous flank assault upon Pickett’s Division and upon Wilcox’s Division the afternoon of the third day. Gen. Veazey was assigned by special de- tail to command other regiments and bri- gades at Gifferent times during his service. In 1864 he was appointed reporter of the decisions of the supreme court of Vermont, and in the Sight years he held this office Se nine volumes of the state reports. ‘o the legislature of 1872-3 he was elected a state senator, and later, in 1873, was ap- pointed register in bankruptcy, continuing in that office until the repeal of the bank- rupt law. For the ten years from 1878 to 1889 he held the. office of judge of the su- preme court of Vermont. In 188 he was one of the commissiorers for revising the laws of Vermont. A Founder of G. A. R. He was one of the founders of the Grand Army of the Republic in the state of Ver- ment, holding the office of post commander of Roberts Post, at Rutland, and was elect- ed department commander in 1873, which rank he held for three years. He organized the first field reunion of the veterans, and ecmmandeé it. Gen. Veazey was judge advocate general when Judge Ray was commander-in-chief in 188 At the Boston encampment, in 1890, he was elected commander-in-chief, and he was an attendant at the national encampments throughout the history of the Grand Army. Always prominent in the local politics of his state Gen. Veazey was a delegate-at- larg: from V2rmont to the nati lican cenvention in 1876, at Cincinnati. 1872 he was appointed by the governor a commissioner to investigate and report to the legislature upon the subject of court experses, with a view to r2trenchment and ref . He was one of the trustees of Dartmouth Coilege from 187S__ until his death, and served in a like capacity for other educational institutions. Dartmouth conferred upon him im 1887 the degree of LL. D. He was appointed to the interstate com- merce commission by President Cleveland August 31, 1889, to fill the unexpired term of Commissioner Aldace F. Walker, rsign- ed, and September 9 of tha: year filed his oath of office and entered upcn the duties. On the assembling of Congreas in Dec>m- ber his appointment was confirmed for this vacancy to January 1, 1890, as well as for a succeeding term of six years to January 1, 1806. him Dee>mber 19, 1895, for a s ing six years’ term, but his health prevented his giving the duties of the office the attention he thought was demanded, and on Decem- ber 20, 1896, h> resigned. Subsequently Gen. Veazey visited Europe in the hope of finding renewed health through a 2a voyage and in change of scene and climat>, and he seemed on bis return much improved; but the inroads of his malady were too serious. After his re- turn he grew gradually weaker until the end came. Seldicr, Advocate and Judge. His has indeed been a busy life as sol- Gier, advocate and judge. His acquaintance was an exceedingly wide one, und marked as his character was for justness, ind:- pendence, rare intelligence and geniality, it easily followed that few men counted so many friends among all classes and coudi- tions of peopl Gen, Veazey’s gallant conduct at Gettys- burg, and on other battlefields, marks him &s one of the herces of the war, but he was loyal ret only to his courtry, but to his friends. He was actuated always by the purest motives. That he should do right in every position which he fiilzd was the underlying intent of his every act. His fine physique and courteous manners added to the prestige of his achievements. Of a singularly lovable disposition h2 at- tached to himse!f all with whom he came in contact, and colleagues and subordinates were alike his enthusiastic admirers with- cut regard to differences of opinion or the circumstances of th hour’s antagonisms. He was a man of ripe judgment, a ford fa- ther, a good husband and a true friend., He leaves a widow, a son, Mr. Albin B. and a daughter, Mrs. Clifford S. eazey was awarded a medal of konor by Congress for distinguishd gal- lantry at Gettysburg. es Master Horseshoers’ Association.
