Consumption kills more men than wars, fam- ines, plagues and accidents, a but its approach is insidious, and men do not realize that they are in its clutch. While consumption is a germ discase, the bacilli will not in- vade sound and healthy lungs. The lungs must first be in a diseased condition. First a man feels a little out of sorts, Probably he is overworked and has given too little time to eating, sleeping and rest- ing. His appetite falls off. His digestion gets out of order and his blood docs not receive the proper amount of life-givii nutriment. The liver becomes torpid and the blood is filled with impurities. These are pumped into every organ of the body, building up unhealthy, halfdead tissues. The most harm is done at the weakest spot, and most frequently that spot is in the lungs. A slight cold leads to inflamma- tion, the bacilli invade the lungs and we have a case of consumption. Ninety-eight per cent. of all cases of TESTIMONY OF MANY MAYORS gee The committee on ways and means of the Telephore Subscribers’ Association con- tinues to receive striking and convincing evidences of the fact that competition ac- tval or threatened against the Bell com- pany has the effect of most substantially reducing the rates charged for the use of telephones. As stated in The Star of Tues- day last, the committee of which Mr. Jas. M. Hoge is chairman has sent out circular letters to the mayors of numerous cities making Inquiries about the operation of the telephone companies in their respective plac end all material information per- taining to the subject. Minister Mendonca Not Informed Re- garding Reported Negotiations. Senor Mendoca, the Brazilian minister, says he has received no information as to the reported negotiations toward the pur- chase of Brazilian warships now in course of coastruction in foreign yards. In other official quarters the impression is growing that there is better prospect of securing ships now building for Argentina and Chile. Brazil has been active of late in building up her navy, and there is doubt as to her willingness to part with any of the ships now building for her. These include two ironclads building at the Armstrong yards, two ironclads at La Seine, France, and three torpedo boat catchers at Stettin, Ger- many. Considerable payments have been made on these, and they have become are the only alliances in which Brazil is concerned, so far as is known in the best informed quarters here, and these would place no restrictions cn the sale of war- and slightly used, storage Taken in ou cxchang>.
