Never saw the time when there wasn't just a crowd of people ready to snap up any bargains we had to offer in odd dressers. Quite an ac- cumulation of odd dressers here now that need attention from bargain ap- preciating people. But lowness of price is only a secondary considera- tion to the value of the pitces them- selves. : Mr. B. B. Phillips Tells.of Life im Gold _Country—Letter to His Mother.” Thcse who have ftiends or relatives in the Kicndike region, as well as those who ccntemplate going to that part of the world, will doubtless: find interesting the following letter, just received by the moth- er of Mr. B. B. Phillips, a young Washing- tcnian, who left Fere a few months ago to seek fortune in the frozen land. The letter Was dated at Dawsen City, October 3, 1897: “Yesterday was ‘letter day’ with every one here. After much delay, owing to the low state of the river, a lot of mail, twelve sacks and about 10,000 letters arrived. Such a scramble for mail you never saw. Christmas at one of the city post offices wes not a circumstance to it. It wound up by almost every one going away happy, as in almost every case there were letters from absent loved ones. “I haraly know how to vegin to. describe my trip in the country, and what I have done since I have been ere. The journey was mostly by river, with a strong current in our favor, save in the fore part of the trip, which was through a chain of lakes. The scenery at times was grand, and at all times was pleasing to the eye. While passing through ihe lakes we caught numerous fish, some of good size, which were most palatable after a steady diet_of bacon and beans, varied with fruit. I Fad the honor of catching the largest fish and only genuine salmon. It weighed twenty-seven pounds, and was the finest- flavored fish I ever ate of. We also had: sev- eral varieties of wild berries, strawberries, cvrrants and gooseberries. It was like tor- ture to get these latter, owing to the fact that you had to go in the woods for them, and the mosquitoes and the small yellow gnats made life miserable. They were bad mirror. These latter are con- sidered the most dangerous pieces of water that one has to contend with, but-with a stanch craft and a good pilot one can nav- igate them successtully. “On the left bank of the river near the rapids are to be seen twenty-five graves, Q Q jal7-2sd telling the fate ef some who have tried to navigate this water. There is no doubt in my taind that many others have tried and failed, and that death and the river have claimed them, acd the world wonders what has become of them. Selects a Camping Place. “I would like to fully describe the last two pieces of water, but space will not per- mit. To make a long story short, we ar- rived here on the date given above, and pitched camp at a small suburb of Dawson, called Louse Town. It hardly deserves its name, for, save for mosquitoes and gnats, it is exceptionally free from vermin of any sort. We selected Louse Town as a camp- ing place, for it seemed more healthy than Dawson at that time, as typhoid fever was prevalent in the city. Louse Town fs old » | Klondike, and is just across the river from Dawson Uity, or the new Klondike. “My experierce here has been varied. T have not worked for wages much, if any, but have spent most of my time tramping around, trying to acquire mining proper- ties, and have succeeded in becoming in- terested in several. “Of course, most of the claims are on nevr and undeveloped creeks, so their value is problematical. I think that I have one good one, howeyer. It is on Deadwood Creek, about four miles down the river Yu- kon and the opposite side from Dawson. I own the claim myself. I have just made arrangements to work it this winter. “October 12.-I was interrupted, and as T a saw ne chs end the letter out did ee é}rot continue until today. A Mr. T. When President McKinley is weary from hours of conferences with politicians and Senator Mason happens to call it is said hat the President always demands that he senator tell him a joke. This the sen- stor does, picking out something from his epertoire applicable to the case in point or to the conditions at the time. But the senator Sprang a new proposition on the President the other day. He proposed to pool his salary with the President's and di- vide. This proposition came about in an appropriate story. but the President has not yet accepted the proposition. Senator Mason is one of those men in the Senate whose expenses are two or three times his salary. Next to Senator Hanna he answers more mail than any other senator.
