AT THE WHITE HOUSE Many Visitors at the Executive Man- Sion, CONFERENCE WITH SENATOR HANNA A Federal Court Vacancy in North * Carolina. OFFICES IN MARYLAND President McKinley had a big rush of business today. Visitors poured into the White House from early in the morning until late in the afternoon. From Senator Hanna down to applicants for positions in the Congressional Library they wended their way to the Executive Mansion. The Ist of congressmen was unusually large, and the President saw and talked with nearly all of them. Of course, Senator Hanna got a good deal of the time at the disposal of the President. The senator, looking better and healthier than before the contest . which weged so fiercely, walked to the White House from the Arlington Hotel, accom- panied by a friend. As he reached the White House he met General Grosvenor coming out. General Grosvenor returned with the senator and was present at the interview with the President. The senator went over the Ohio situation with the Pres- ident, and the talk was exceedingly inter- esting. Senator Hanna will be here sev- eral days. He says he was called here on private business a day or so before he intended coming. Senator Hanna has apparently suffered no physical troubles from the labors of the conflict in his state. He is said to have been badly worsted shaking hands with some of his warm-hearted constituents who flocked into Columbus to aid him. Judge Dick's Resignation. The resignation of Judge Robert P. Dick of the federal court of North Carolina was today placed in the hands of the President by Representative Pearson and Senator Pritchard. The resignation is on account of old age. Judge Dick was appointed on the bench by President Grant in 1872 and has served with distinction. He was a member of the confederate congress, and immediately after the war was appointed to the supreme bench of the state. He was serving there when nominated to the fed- eral bench by General Grant. The resig- nation has already produced a for the vacancy. Senator Pritchard him- self has been mentioned for the position, but he said today that he would not take the position. To do so would put in danger a republican senator from that state. The legisiature is divided between the populists, democrats and republicans and Senator Pritchard was elected by populist votes. It is doubtful if that vote would again go to a republican. Jucge Robert M, Douglass of the supreme bench of North Carolina, and a son-in-law of Jrdge Dick, is a candidate for the cancy, and is receiving the indorsement of members of the legal fraternity. Other candidates are Capt. Charles Price of Salis- V Lusk cf Asheville, ex-Repre- ive H. G. Ewart of Hendersonville and Gcorge H. Smathers of Waynes Col. J. E. Boyd, assistant attorney gen of the department of justice, is receiving legrams urging him to become an appli- nt for the place, and he may be in the fight. Discussing the Civil Service. Civil Service Commissioner Procter had a conference with the President. Mr. Proc- ter was asked about the efforts of con- Fs Ss ss Ss Sa Soe So % sage Seesessoadentonroniontontontoeseasenteontone %s oe Soegege seesesgeege Soe Soadoadoadpatendoogecgegearseegeeseatontongongoatongontontontengengengente $ gressmen to have the employes of the Ss life-saving service exempt from the classi- & | fied service, on the ground that the serv- 4] ice was becoming stocked with unskilled | and unqualified men. He said that Super- % | intendent Kimball of the life-saving serv- ice did not think the service was being $I] hurt by being under the civii service law. % | __Representatives Curtis and Broderick ot | Kansas, regarded as knowing as much as %|any two men about the conaition of In- dian affairs, this morning called on the a President and ask m to appoint E. Stanley of Lawrence, Kan., as commission- er of Indian schools, in place of—Mr. Heil- man, the present commissioner. They speak hishly of the qualifications of Mr. Stanley. Marzland Delegation Calls. An important delegation of Maryland re- publicans had a long talk with the Presi- dent today. The delegation consisted of Representatives Barber and Baker, State Senator Williams, Monitor Watchman, a presidential elector in the last election; C, Ross Mace, a delegate to the last national convention; A. A. Blakeney, county com- missioner of Baltimore county; J. Edward ¢ | Webster, James M. Reynolds and F, F. $ | Eliiocott. %| The primary object of the delegation was to recommend the nomination of John B. Hanna as surveyor of the port of Bal more and to ask the nomination of Mr. EI licott to a consulship. The delegation di: cussed other matters. President McKinley expressed the hope that there would be no deadlock or fight in the republican ranks over the senatorship, and said he thought the republicans ought to be able to elect a good man. The surveyorship will not be filled for some time. ———— THE COURTS. 3 Equity Court No. 1—Justice Cox. 4 Janney agt. Webb; pro confesso against certain defendaats ordered. Fuss agt. The advance reports of the -bureau of statistics show that during December the imports of wool at the three leading ports amounted to 17,768,246 pounds, valued at $1,908,974. This is an inerease as compared with the December returns for 1896 for the same ports of over 7,600,000 pounds and $880,000 in value. The sugar imports at Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and San Francisco during December last, exclusive of Hawaiian sugar free, amount- ed to. 100,132,148 pounds, valued at $1,923,- 793. This is a decrease over November, 1897, of about 23,275,000 pounds. The -m- ports Of sugar are increasing each month, however, and for January are expected to almost equal the imports for the month of last year. nd “Want” ads in The Star pay because they bring answers. ‘ 11 "Bring your card plate, if you have one, and we will reprint on best bristol board 50 cards for 25¢, or 100 for only 45c.
