The decorations of the drawing rooms and lbrary were fragrant roses, while the table made an exquisite picture, adorned with bridesmaid roses and lighted by tiny wax candles, which emit- ted a soft glow, under silver and white shades. Mrs. Hobart received the guests in a superb gown of pearl gray brocade, trimmed in rare ol] lace, with ornaments of pearls and diamonds. Mrs. McKinley wore a rich gown of blue satin, with dia- mond crnaments. This was Mrs. McKin- ley’s first appearance as a dinner guest this season. The other guests were the Secretary of State and Mrs. Sherman, the Secretary of the Treasury and Mrs. Gage, Mrs. Alger, the Attorney General and Mrs. McKenra, the Postmaster Gen- eral and Mrs. Gary, the Secretary of the Navy and Mrs. Long, the Secretary of the Interior and Mrs. Bliss, the Secretary of Agriculture, Mrs. Sanford, the guest of the house, and Ser ator Sewell of New Jersey. Mrs. Leiter’s dance last night in honor of her youngest daughter, Miss Daisy, brilliant affair. Mrs. gcwned in pink velvet, with’ ruby orna- ments, received the three hundred odd guests in the large drawing room off the ball room. Mrs. Letter was assisted in this cuty by Miss Daisy and her sister. The sole decoration of the room was a bank of Furple orchids before the portrait of Mrs. Curzon, Mrs. Leiter's eldest daughter. ‘The ball room was handsomely adorned with palms, a wall of this handsome foliage hid- ing the orchestra from view. The cotlilion, which was led by Mr. Craig Wadsworth dancing with Miss Daisy Leiter, consisted of seven figures, some of them exceedingly pretty and novel. Fifty couples took part. The favors, which consisted of gilded picks for the men and gold-colored nuggets for the ladics in the Klondike figure, and Chinese umbrellas, German pipes, wands, flags and four-leaf clovers, were dispensed by the hostess, Mrs. John R. Mclean and Mrs. Hill. Supper was served at small ta- bles decorated with roses. The guests were received by Mrs. Archibald Hopkins and Mrs. Walker in the ball room, which was undecorated eave for the bank of palms that screened the or- chestra. The supper room, however, wes handsomely decorated in green and white, the table appointments being red. The floral decorations, ices and candies were in white and green, and the tapers burned under pale green shades. The name cards had quotations amusing and suggestive, and the favors were pr tly shaped French bon-bon boxes tied with green ribbon. The annual recurrence of the. charit ball for the benefit of that admirable inst tution, the Children’s Huspital, is always looked forward to with most pleasant an- ticipation by the society people of Wash- ington, as it is the first function of season where such a large gathering sembles. The bail this year will be the evening of Thursday, January 20, the National Rifles’ armory, and it prom- ises to be more brilliant of its prede-essers in recent years. Mrs. Mc- Kinley has a dinner engagement for that evening, but has promised to be present if she can possibly make the arrangements.
