ANNIE CRAWFORD'S PLEDGE. A Promise to Reform is Speedily Forgotten. When Annie Crawford wes released from the farm yesterday she made a good reso- lution. “'m going to stop drinking liquor,” she told one of the guards, ‘‘and,” she added, “ll never come here again." But Annie had made similar resolutions before, and the guard didn’t believe her. “This time,” said Annie, when the guard had expressed a doubt about her resolu- tion, “I'm gcing to surprise my friends.” It developed an hour later that one of Annie's friends surprised her, and her res- olution was smashed befcre sundown. One drink gave Fer a longing for another, and finally, when ske was hardly able to nav- igate, Policeman Kimmell deprived her of her Hberty. ‘This morning she was the onty female in the District branch of the Police Court. ‘Well, Mr. Flynn said Annie, when the popular policeman appeared to see that she got her breakfast, “I'm here again, but I hope it wil be the last." “Too much to drink?” queried the officer. ed; “that’s what Was it beer or whisky 1 mixed it, and {t knocked me out.” Do you feel like taking a cup of coffee?” ;deed, I do, Mr. Flynn,” said she, “but I'd like to have it without any cream and a litde sugar.” ‘Sorry I can’t accommodate you; caterer put in both cream and sugar morning.” “Well, I'll try some of ft, anyhow.” Later in the morning the httle old wo- m:n headod the procession of prisoners in dock, and as the charge against her s nothing more serious than disord: y conduct, she pleaded guilty, expecting that the impositicn of a fine of $ would fol- the judge said ‘Ten dollars or aay. and added “I think this woman the this been here be- Many a time,” Clerk Potts responded, went do IPS TENTH ANNIVERSARY. Wiflard’s production of “The Rogue's Come@y,” at that playhouse last night. “The Rogué’s Comedy” is one of Mr. Willard’s «many. successes, and his work last night in the part of Bailey Bro- tkero, the ofly, ireclsless rascal, who is not, however, witheut wedeeming traits, was fully in keepimg ngt only with that per- formed in other pmeductions, but in this same play in seasems past. Mr. Willard’s irterpretation af this part is perhaps one of the best efforts: that he makes, and while the character @tself is looked down upon for the picture that dt portrays, the idea is almost lost in the admiration that is called for by Mr. Willard’s efforts. Mr. Willard Was well supported. Miss Keith Wake- man, as the star's wife, had a sympathetic bart, which she carried out extremely well, while Mr. Oswald Yorke, as the son, also did some splendid work. Mr. and Mrs. H. Cane, rMs. Yorke, Miss Knight, Miss Van Buren. Miss Roberts, Bromley Davenport, Mr. Verner Charges, H. E. Lonsdale and George Easton assisted materially in mak- ing the production a complete success. The settings of the picce were, as usual, fully in keeping with Mr. Willard’s work and methods. Tonight ard témorrow afternoon Mr. Willard will repeat*his excellent im- Personatiog in ‘David Garrick,” and to- morrow night will close his engagement with his splendid creation of Cyrus Bien- karn in “The Middleman.” MR. RAKEMANN'’S CHAMBER CON- CERT.-The second concert of chamber music m the ser'es given by Mr. Herman Rakemann in the music room at the Wash- ington Club last-night brought out a large and appreciative audience. ‘The first num- ber, trio by Rubinstein, opus 62, was of powerful movement, the piano part being particularly difficult, and it was executed with signal ability by Mrs. W. S. Bowen. The ‘cello solo by Miss Wignall, a Rondo of Boccherini, was, in some respects, the gem of the evening, the appleuse winning an encore. Miss Wignall plays with rare depth of feeling, and a charming person- ality adds much to the enjoyment of her performance. Seated in the doek of the Police Court this morning was an elderly man named Andrew Coppernel, the charge against whom was vagramey and suspicion. Cop- pernell is a pemsiomer, and he says he is de- sirous of going to the Hampton home. “When I foumd ‘Kim in an alley in North- east Washington, dast night,” said Police- man Dalrymple, “ke had his coat thrown over his head.” “I'm rupturea,’”’ the old man said, ‘‘and I was refused #rangportation to Hampton, but now I’m geingithere.” “How do you ‘expect to reach there?” Judge Scott asked :him. “Tl have to{walk,” take it in easysstages.”” When he said hd ‘had spent his pension money instead’ of buying his ticket to Hempton, the ‘court mildiy criticised. James Gocdwin, a young man not twenty years old, was arrested last night by Po- liceman Morgan of the fifth precinct and Iccked up on a charge of arson. He was charged by Edward L. McCabe with having caused the fire on Sth street southeast Tuesday morning, when several buildings were damaged. Among them was a build- ing oceupied by the bicycle firm of Drew & Goodwin. James Goodwin, who was ar- rested, is a brother of a member of the firm. Mr. McCate, who, it is said, had done some work about ihe shop, failed to appear in the Police Court this morning to sub- stantiate the charge. The result w Goodwin was di ged, and McCabe w! probably be brought before the court for alleged contempt Attorney Woodward, counsel for Mr. Goodwin, was very indignant because of the treatment of his client. He could see no justification whatever for his arrest ané incarceration, and he so stated to the prosecuting attorney. Mr. Goodwin, too, was argry about it. and Mr. Mullowny thought he was justly so. He had been arrested without a war- rant and at the request of a young man who, he said, had no reason for doing what he did. The officer's version of the affair is that McCabe requested him to make the arrest upon the charge, saying he would appear in court this morning to prosecute the case. McCabe, the officer refused to gi him and idea of what proof, if any, he had against Goodwin. Goodwin had been in the habit of sleeping in the rear of the bicycle shcp, and he was there Tuesday morning when the fire broke out.
