The part played by insects in the distri- bution of minute vegetable organisms has been made the subject of an interesting investigation by Dr. Amedeo Berlese at the Portict laboratory for agricultural chemistry. That they do perform this task, often a very mischievous one, has long been known, but the professor, as is shown in the current number of Nature, has prov- ed that, for good or evil, they are more active than had been hitherto ascertained. ere the subject of his first experi- Hie had frequently detected the of two alcoholic yeasts hidden in fis- sures of the bark on the trunks of both fruit and forest trees. These he suspected to h been transported by the ants, which were constantly traveling up and down the trunks, and it seemed Itkely that s might co-operate in the work. First, put the question” to the ants. He col 1a large number of a species which is common in vineyards. They were al- 1 access to bunches of grapes which been carefully sterilized, and after- had ward placed under conditions that prevent- ed the possibility of any introduction of molds or yeasts from the outer air. The result, in less than a fortnight, was that all the bunches which the ants could visit were abuntanuy infested with yeasts and molds, while several others which had been preserved, ev for a much longer time, in sterilized vessels from which the ants were excluded, had neither molds nor yeasts nor bacteria on their surfaces. Dr. Berlese then turned his attention to the flies. His methods of inquisition, we fear, would not be approved by those who share Corporal Toby's view and are merci- ful even to the housefly and the bluebot- tle. In fact, these torments of the human race must have had a decidedly bad time in the laboratory. The firts cxperiment, however, was simple and humane. A num- ber of bits of sterilized meat were set out on a terrace, some of them covered by wire gauze, others accessible to the flies. After two hours’ exposure to them and thirteen to the air yeasts were found to be much more abundant in the former. Indeed, Dr. Burlese estimates that the quantity of yeasts conveyed by flies is about twenty- six times as great as is brought by the air. Similar experiments were made with grapes, and with similar results. The next point to settle was the precise way in which the transport was effected. It was first ascertained that ferments were often more frequent in the bodies of files than on their legs and feet; next, cells similar to those of yeast were detected in their excreta. It remained, then, to study the passage of these cells through the digest- ive apparatus of the insect. Common blue- bottles, or meat files, were selected for this purpose, and a large number of experi- ments were made on them; but some other flies and cellar midges were also tested. It was proyed.in all cases that when the flies were fed with sterilized material the excreta contained no yeasts, but when they had a diet of pure cultures of sundry yeasts the excreta soon contained in great quan- tities the yeasts that were in the food. These cells also were not dead, but living. If collected they duly generated and devel- oped, though the rate of the process and the abundance of the result were found to depend to a considetable extent on the tem- perature maintained. Further experiments indicated that the cells increased in number in passing through the body of the fly, and the general result of the whole series was to demonstrate that ants and certain files play an important part not only in the distribution (as was already known), but also in the preservation of and multiplica- tion of alcoholic ferments. Insects, in fact, contribute far more than atmospheric air to the dissemination of yeasts, which are conveyed internally rather than exter- nally. In some cases this distributing agency may be exercised for good, but we eorpect it is far more often potent for evil. ——_~+ e+______ Valuable Bank Notes. From Tit-Bits. The largest amount of a bank note in circulation in 1827 was £1,000. It is said that two notes for £100,000 each and two for £50,000 were once engraved and issued. A butcher who had amassed an immense fortune in war time went one day with one of these £50,000 notes to a private banker, asking the loan of £5,000 and wish- ing to deposit the big note as security in the banker’s hands, saying that he had kept it for years. The £5,000 was at once handed over, but the banker hinted at the same time to the butcher the folly of hoarding such a sum and losing the in- terest. “‘Wery true, sir,” replied the butch- er; “but I likes the look on’t so wery well that I have t’other one of the same kind at home.” An eccentric gentleman in London framed a bank note for £30,000, and exhibited it for five years in one of his sitting roomi The fifth year he died, when the “picture’ was at once taken down and cashed by his heirs. Some years ago, at a nobleman’s house near Hyde Park, a dispute arose about a certain passage in Scripture, and a dean who was present denying there was any such text at all, a Bible was called for. A dusty old Bible was accordingly pro- duced, which had never been removed from its shelf since the death of the noble- man’s mother, several years before. When it was opened, a mark was found in it, which on examination proved to be a bank note for £40,000. It might possibly have been placed there as a reproof to the son, who, perhaps, did not consult the Bible so often as his mother would have wished. AUCTION SAL —see. cS OF REAL ESTATE, &c. Today.
