TO PLAY FOR TROPHY Five Teams in the National Basket POTTING THE GAME CN A HIGH PLANE Arranging to Meet Out-of-Town Teams. OFFICERS AND DELEGATES oa The National Kasket Rall League, the oldest of the two organizations now pl ing the game in this city, was organized September 12 as a permanent association, the original members being the Corcoran Cadets, Carroll Institute and the Washing- ton Athletic Club. According to the rules | Of the association, no club was to be ad- mitted that could not furnish a ground upon which the games scheduled could be piayed. This practically compelled every team in the organization to have a house of its own, and barred many organizations that were anxious to secure a membership. After organization was effected, an invi- tation to enter was exte 1 to all clubs | wishing to play basket ball. The Nation. Fencibles and the Government. Printiy Office Athletic Association responil the five clubs formed the N i and tional Basker Ball League of the District of Columbin. The officers elected were: President, W. K. Larrimore; secretary and treasurer, Geot W. McGiue; delegates, Capt. E. C. Hd- wards, Corcoran Cadets; Capt. C. S. Do- mer of National Fencibles; Instructor Maurice Joy of Carroll Institute; Mr. M. J. Brown, Washingtcn Athletic Club; ana Mr. Joseph Mangum, government printing office. The league holds a meeting after the game played every week, at the club house where the game is play The rules of the national association are played by the league, and they have quite a corps of vm- pres. The staff consists of Messrs. George McGlue, Adam Johnson, James Bauby an@ W. Brinkley. The Trophy. The league decided to give a trophy every year to the club winning the most games during the season. The cup is to become the property of the club winning the cham- pionship, and is not to be competed for an- nually. The cup itself is twelve inches high, standing upon an ebony base four inches in height, making the trophy sixteen inches high in all. It is of burnished sil- \er, with a pretty repousse chased fron The handies are exiended and artisti chased. Around the base of the raised repousse border, half the width al- most of the lower portion of the sil base. The main base of ebony nas a sil- ver plate attached to the front, with a rococo border, on which is inscri! tienal Basket Ball League, District of Co- lumbis.”. The inscription ap proper | is as follows: “Champions, District of Co- ;lumbia Basket Ball, National Assoc Rules.” Above the word “champ: be engraved the name of th | the whole making © trophy of whic club in the anization might weil proud of winning. The season promises to t ful in every way. At p: games have been played, but it is more than satisfactory to the league, both in attendance. and from a financial view. In the game piayed beiween the Corcoran | Cadets and the Carroll Institute, in which ithe latter lost, considerable surprise was }expressed that the Corcorans should put jin an entirely new team in the first in- |nings. This was due to the fact that the corps has two good teams, the juniors and the seniors. In the practice games the juniors managed to hoid their own against the seniors, and so successful were they that it was decided to give them a showing in a regular league game. Accordingly the junior team waz put ia for the first half. ‘They lost their nerve, and in that inning a score of 19 to © was piled against them. In the second inuing the seniors were put in, and they managed to hold their op- ponents down and score four goals, Out-of-Town Games, The Corcoran Cadets have closed with the Central and West End Y. M. C. A. of Baltimore for two games, one in each city. Arrangements have also been made with the West Philadelphia Y. M. C. A. for two games, to be played some time after Janu- ary 1, 1898. The first Baltimore game is with the West End Y. M. C. A., and will be played next Thursday at Baltimore. It is the desire of the local league to play the game as i is played in all the cities in the north—clean and open—and to do this the organization has secured the services of Mr. H. Ferguson, captain of last year’s team of the Baltimore Young Men's Chris- tian Association, the team which won the nattonal basket ball championship. He will coach ail of the teams in the local league, and under his direction considerable tm- provement can be looked for. Not all of the clubs have played their opening game.
