N.W BEWARE OF THE CAR TRACKS Under no condition can the street car tracks be termed the friend of the cyclist. Not only the street car, but the steam ratl- road tracks can also be includ The sim- ple-looking pieces of ron and steel fu of trickery and treachery for the uns pecting rider, beguiling him on only to throw him over at the first opportunity. Some people have found out that it is foolish to monkey with the buzz saw, and many cyclists have also found out that it is foolish to moakey with the car tracks. Both come in nearly the same category. In this city there is no need for any ride taking any chances in bucking against the railroad iracks. The streets are plenty wide enough and smooth enough for safe riding. In other cities this may the case. The highways are so badiy paved and so rough that the street car tracks and the space inclosed by the rails turn’ the best of riding. Over in Baltimore it is a common sight to see the bieye strung out behind the street car: in the slot, which furnishes the roadway on many of the st city. Ever since the cable ha: duced in this city it has brought «isa upon ihe cyclists, and they onght to member it. When cable road was first intro in this city solid or rat-tail tir, use. They were of such smutl that the tire and wheel itself ¥ fall into the slot of the cabl happened to be run over th many riders are there now in th remember having a sudden slide, arising only to find the wh cable. Outside of a few scrapes bruises the rider was fortunate if he caped with only a few broken spoke: Generally the whole wheel would be kled so badly as to be unable to turn in the forks. Even now with the pneumstic tire the danger is not lessened. it is ur there is no danger of the dire slippin through the slot of either the cable or th underground electric read, but if the tie is ridden over the opening it will get cut worse than if the rim spoiled the tire. Then, again, the rider is apt at any w ment to pick up a splinter of steel, will go through the tire like light cause a more or less serious pune cu rider may be fortunate in this respect and ride in the slot for some weeks without getting so much as a scrap» to the rub ber of the tire, and then, again, he m: y lime he rides in that Another thing concerning the car tracks that the new rider overlooks is in attempt- ing to cross at almost a puralle!. This ts foolish. In a majority of cases the cyclist finds himself sprawling on the ground fore he knows it. The experience t him something. Never attempt car track unless at nearly 4 The wheel will then straight ove rail, and the rider necd have no fear falling. If the cross is made at too great an acute angle, so as to be nearly p i with the track. the direction of the tire is apt to be changed by being caught in the groove of the rail. This causes the ma- jority of spills. Aguin, when out in the country and “he tracks of the suburban roads are struck additional care kas to be exercised. The same applies when crossing the tracks of a steam railrood. The rails are generally several inches higher than the roadway, and should be taken at direct right angles when crossed. If taken at any other angie the tire apt to slip on the edge of the ruil, and a nasty fall results. This is es- pecially the case when the rails are wet or covered with grease, as they are in a 1un- ber of cases. Always be careful in making across the turns in the tracks. The construction at this point is slightly different, and the pro- jection of the rails above the roadway greater. More than this, the groove in the rail is wider and deeper, increasing the chances of falling. Invariably make the cross at right angles, and never attempt to ride in the groove of the rail at a turn. Nine times out of ten it will result disas- trously to you and your wheel.
