Woodward *, Lothrop, Toth, 11th and F Sts. N. W. Friday’s Our Remnant Day. Our Special Bargain Day. Every bolt of goods has anend. Hence many remnants come— every class of goods composed of a line of sizes has its medium sizes sold first, thereby leaving the very large or very small sizes—sets of China Ware, through some mishap or other, lose a piece or two, leaving the set incomplete—various sorts of goods are soiled, mussed or finger marked from doing service as window or department decorations—other classes of merchandise, such as Glass Ware, Tin Ware, Wooden Ware, etc., are scratched, cracked, dented or otherwise defaced in transit or from improper handling in the store. From these several sources remnants ac- cumulate very rapidly, and we cannot push them aside or pile them up. Our business policy demands their absolute and immediate clearance in order to keep the stock fresh, bright and up to date. Hence Friday of each week is devoted to the selling of remnants —fragments, remainders, useful bits for personal and home use, etc. Tomorrow wiil be a remnant day of unusual importance, as for quick distribution, we’ve made the prices in many cases half and less. GENERAL AND PERSONAL Evening Star Bureau, No. 529 King street, Bell Telephone No. 106, ALEXANDRIA, Va., October 28, 1897. An Alexandria paper advocates the re- opening of the St. Asaph race trackin the following editorial last night: “Horse races are now run at Morris Park, Louisville, Cincinnati, Chicago and Nash- vilie, notwithstanding the prevailing rain and mud, and bets on them are made at St. Asaph. But at the latter track no horse racing is allowed even in good racing weather. But it is hard to tell what a Vir- ginia legislature won’t do nowadays.” A great many people are of the opinion that to the race tracks which were form- erly conducted in Alexandria is due much of the lawlessness that has always existed there, and the fact that large crowds go to the St. Asaph track to bet on the races every day is said to have caused the down- fall of many young men. It is hoped by many Alexandrians that the racing in Aiexandria county will never be resumed, but that at the next session of the legislature such laws will be passed as will prohibit even pool selling at the tracks, and thus get rid of the motley joan that gather in the county every ay.
