PLEAS OF THE UNFORTUNATE Numerous Applicants for Relief Today at the District Sanitary Office, Aid Sought in the Effort to Reach Distant Friends—Cases of Insanity. Sanitary Officer Frank was the busiest man in the police department this morn- irg. A few minutes after his office ‘was opened there was scarcely standing room there owing to the presence of a large number of applicants for assistance. Some vaunted to go to hospitals, others wanted transportation and still others were look- ing after the interests of sick or insane friend: William Ferguson and his wife were among those who sought assistance in th way of raliroad transportation, and they were not sent away disappointed. Both were poorly dressed and a small bundle carried by them contained their earthly possessions, in addition to what they had on their backs. They looked tired and weather beaten and were extremely grate- ful for the assistunce rendered. According to their statements Ferguson and _ his young wife tramped from Frederick, Md., to Alexandria, spending Saturday night in the latter city. He said they went to Alexandria because he expected to find friends there, but not succeeding, they came here and spent last night in the crgetown police station. They were fur- ed transportation to Lynchburg. Husband Deserted Her. Mrs. Jennie Sorrell, twenty years old, and a wife of twelve months, was also an applicant for transportation. She said she had tramped through the mud all the way from Balttmore, and her condition was such as to leave no doubt as to the truth of her statement. She had lived in Vir- ginia, she said, near Eagle mountain, not far from Clifton Forge, and a year ago she married a man whom ske said was a clock and sewing machine repairer. She went to Baltimore with him, where she declares he deserted her a few days a Being among strangers and without funds, she did not know what to do. Finally she concluded to start toward her old home in Virginia, ne reached here she was 3 She had not even a change of her husband having left her in a very dition. Judge of Police Court Will Permit No Discrimination. Judge Mills today in the Police Court made an announcement from the bench to members of the metropolitan police force, which was, in effect, an order to hereafter bring into court the men who figure in the cases of women arrested for enticng for purposes of prostitution and on charges of a similar character. It has been the tule in the past to permit the men t8 de- part unmolested, while the women were compelled to bear the brunt of the prose- cution. “Why didn’t you bring in the man who was with this woman?” asked Judge Mills of a policeman who was the complaining witness in such a case today. “I knew of no law on which to detain him,” replied the policeman. ‘Hereafter you may charge the men with vegrancy, or hold them as witnesses,” sug- gested the ccurt. “I want them brought in by all means.” ——__—_— Book sale at Sloan’s tonight—rain or shin2. —Advertisement. —_—.—__ COMMITTEES TO CONFER.
