The mayor is busy impressing upon the members of the police force the great im- ance of having the city put in a com- Piete sanitary condition. They are in- tructed to use diligent effert to have all Ev A meeting of the executive council of the American Federation of Labor began at headquarters in this city yeSterday, and its sessions are expected to continue during the greater part of the week. Dunean, Garland and O'Connell were appointed a committee to audit the books of the federation, and they are ex- pected to report either this evening or to- morrow. President M. D. Ratchford of the United Mine Workers of America and Cameron Miller of the executive board of the latter organization were in conference with the executive council, with a view of determin- what can be done financially and other- wise to help the miners of West Virginia and Ulinois, who have not been accorded the wage scale as,agreed upon at the Co- jumbus convention. There were other mat- ters considered in connection with the min- ers’ struggle, but no final conclusions reached. Mining Districts Tied Up. Frank J. Weber, one of the organizers of the federation, who has heen in West Virginia, came in during the meeting for the purpose of making a report, and stated that the Kanawha and New River dis- tricts are completely tied up. He also re- ported that there will be a conference this afternoon at Charleston, W. Va., between members of the coal exchange and the committee of the miners in that state, and the possibilities are, he believes, that they will come to an agreement. Many of the operators outside of the coal exchange, Mr. Weber says, have agreed to grant the con- ditions asked by the miners, will pay their prices, and recognize the union. President Ratchford and the other repre- sentatives of the United Mine Workers ex- pressed their gratifieation at the generous financial assistance rendered by the Ameri- can Federation of Labor and its affiliated unions in the strike, and the hearty co- cperation which the officials of the federa- tion had given to them. The Columbus Scale. At the request of Mr. Ratchford of the the city of Tate, and the physicians ome to the conclusion that it is due to the many foul places in the first ward. It is also believed that the water mains pd flushing. There has been no occasion for opening the plugs of late, and it is be- lieved that the water, which is generally the purest of the pure, has become some- what polluted. Mayor Simpson has been highly com- mended for his activity in this matter, and it is believed that his action has been the means of saving many cases of sickness. Chairman Lamb's Friends. Those republicans of this city who are followers of the deposed chairman, Lamb, will hold a convention in Shuler’s Hall to- morrow night to elect delegates to the con- vention called by Mr. Lamb. Drank Laudanum. Herbert, the little son of Mr. Henry H. Blunt, who drank a large dose of laudanum vhile playing with a bottle containing that drug, was reported better this morning. The baby is teething. and Mrs. Hunter got scme laudanum to rub on its gums. While Mrs. Hunter was out of the rocm the little ene got hold of the bottle and drank its contents. Drs. Smith and Klipstein were sent for hastily and succeeded in saving its life. Annual Election. Friendship Chapter, Epworth League, Will hold its annual election of officers to- night at o'clock. This chapter is in a flourishing condition, and new members are being added constantly. Junior Mechenics. When he reached the Center market ‘t was late, and he inquired for a cheap lodging house. “I know where you can get lodging and breakfast for ten cents,” said a yourg colored man to the strarger, “but you will have to buy a drink.” This Butler was willing to do, and when the strange young man inquired if he had ON THE WEST SIDE OF SIXTEENTH STREET any money, Butler produced his pocket BEEWEEN (LAND “My STREEIS NORTH. book to prove that he was not without funds.
