Experiments With the System Which May Ee Adopted. A report has been received by the Post Office Departmeat from Lieutenant Geore Squire and Prof. Albert C. Crekore on their recent experiments with their synchronoma- graph system of rapidly transmitting in- telligence by the alternating current upon the li: es of the British postal sysiem, for which they recently went to Ergland. They say that W. H. Preece, the engi- neer-in-chief of the British telegraphs, gave them every facility, placing his as- sistants, work shops and other things at their disposal. The apparatus was set up in the general office of London. On Au- gust 8 messages were sent over a copper and iron wire from London via Leeds to Glasgow, to Edinburgh, anJ_ return via Neweastle, Tyne and York to London. The distance was 564 miles, forty-four of which were underground. It was found that slightly under 4,000 words a minute could be sent and the speed might have been increased. About 630 complete waves of the alternating current were cmployed, or 1,300 single impulses of current. The pres- ent experiments are being conducted with the synchronomagraph transmitter upor the regular Wheatstone receiver in use on the British telegraph service. ‘The Postmaster General replied to their letter yesterday, extending his congratu- ! lations on the success which attended their experiments, and advised them that he would be pieased to hear further regarding them. At the last session of Congress Senator Pettigrew introduced a Dill au- thorizing ihe Postmaster General to ac- j auire possessien of this system of tele- and and The this graphing, if it should prove a succes to put up s line between New Yor! The Philadelphia, flagship of the Pacific station, now at Honolulu, is to come home as soon as the necessary orders can reach her. This will leave the Bennington as the sole representative of the United States navy at Honolulu until the Baltimore reaches that port. It has been found nec- essary to adopt this course in order to get the crew to man the Baltimore, which aow lies at Mare Island navy yard almost ready for sea. With the men secured from the Philadelphia by re-enlistment, it will be possible to man the Baitimore and send her back at once to the Hawaiian Islands. At one time it was believed it would be necessary to send the battle ship Oregon out for this purpose, but that plan was abandoned. As the Japanese cruiser Nani- ‘wa has left Honolulu for Japan, it {s be- lieved that no interests are jeopardized by leaving only the Bennington there. —e-______ Not Wanted Here. The Treasury Department has received information that an anarchist named Joseph Ventre some time ago was expelled from Spain, and that he had arrived at Tampico, Mexico, on his way to the United States. It is also stated that Ventre re- ceived assistance from parties in Mexico in his efforts ta reach this country, and that passage had been engaged for him on the City of Washington.
