Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. ASBURY PARK, N. J., July 8, 189 The first week in July has brought in its train a host of visitors to this lively, bustling and ever attractive resort. Some of them have been only temporary par- ticipants In the city’s attractions, reckon- ing the duration of their stay within the limits of the veek. Others have come loaded with trunks and bags, which be- speak the “all-the-season” guest. Crowds, however, have ccme and gone again. The railrcad men say that ten thousand people got off at Asbury Park on the 3d of July. ‘These are largely excursionists, the itiner- ant, lunch-box laden, return-ticket visitors, who thoroughly enjoy a day at the shore, dividing their time between a cold lunch and a sea bath. The Fourth of July saw en immense crowd in town. They came from all the surrounding towns within a radius of sixty miles and put in a couple of enjoyable days here. For their enter- tainment there was no end of special feat- ures. On Saturday, the 3d, there was a ball game at the Athletic grounds In the morning. In the afternoon there were bi- cycle races and field sports at the same place, including a half-mile exhibition ride by Zimmerman, the world’s ex-champion. On Sunday patriotic services here and in the great Ocean Grove Auditorium drew thousands to a decorous and fitting ob- servance of the national holiday. On Mon- day the races and sports at the Athletic grounds continued. In Ocean Grove a splendid patriotic service, including a pro- gram of eleven numbers, was held in the morning in the Auditorium. Senator Ed- ward C. Stokes of Millville delivered a powerful and eloquent oration to an audi- ence of 5,000 persons. A choir of a hundred voices assisted. in the evening, Atlantic square was filled with 20.000 who witnessed a splendid fireworks display and listened to @ concert. At the Hotels. At the hotels, social events have been of the most enjoyable sort. The hops on Saturday evening last, which were all full Gress affairs, easily persuaded the partici- pants for the time being at least that !fe is “one continual round of pleasure.” There were never better patronized or more bril- Mant hops given than on that evening, which is largely accounted for from the fact that the boys were down from the city in ample numbers for o the Fourth and helped make the dances unusually successful. At the Brunswick, the large number of society people, many of them being from Washington, helped make the ball in the beautiful casino an event of more than ordinary brilliancy. The Coleman hop was a decided success. house, which always entertains the best class of guests, is always in the lead in socia) matters. The ball room was a veritable fairyland, and handsome gowns and graceful dancers were present in be- wildering profusion on Saturday evening last. Hops were also held at all the other big houses. Among the most successful and best attended were those at the Columbia, where an especially brilliant hop was given; also at the Fenimore, the Lafayette, the Ocean House and the Waldorf. On Sunday Bishop Newman preached to an audience of upward of four thousand people in the Ocean Grove Auditorium. William T. Smith of Iowa preached in the evening. Sunday evening concerts at the leading hotels are very popular. The Coleman and Brunswick offer an array of talent that is equaled nowhere. They both had excep- tionally fine programs last Sunday even- ing. On Monday the bicycle club of the Cole- man House tock its first run of the sea- son. ‘Ihey went to Oceanville. Several Washington people were in the party. Guests From Washingto Among prominent and well-known citi- zens of Washington who are summering here are the following: Mr. John Tweedale, chief clerk of the War Department, and Mrs. Tweedale are at the Curlew. The camping season, however, has not yet begun.
