JaT-tr = = = COLUMBIA HEIGHTS CITIZENS. The Association Asks for Establish- ment of a Park. The regular monthly meeting of the Columbia Heights Citizens’ Association was held in St. Stephen’s Hall, last even- ing, President M. A. Ballinger, presiding. The meeting was a very brief one, and the association adjourned to meet the first Tuesday in October. Complaint was made by several members that the streets in Columbia Heights are not properly sprinkled, and the secretary of the association was instructed to call the attention of the Engineer Commission- er “to the fact that no sprinkling has been done this year on Whitn avenue, 14th sireet extended and Park street,” and Tequest that it be done at once, and in the evening instead of the middle cf the day. Mr. Campbell, from the committee ap- poinied at a previous meeting to consider the advisability of securing the establish- ment of a park at the corner of 4th street and Columbia road, reported that a peution asking the establishment of the park has been prepared, an] that about every one in ihe section has signed it At Mr. Campbell's suggestion, the com- mittee was increased t9 seven, the presi- dent of the association being ‘added, and the committee was instructed to lay the matter before the District Commissioners and Congress, ‘The committee, as increased, is composed of the following members: President bal- linger and Messrs. Gibbs, Campbeil, Bu dy, McCalmon:, Cotton ahd O'Donoghue. Before the adjournment of the a: tion the following were elected to mem- bership: Wm. D. Hoover, Wm. P. Tucker, John H. London and Jacob Madert. ——— CROWNED WITH TRIUMPH. Robert F. Wersham Finally Weddea to the Girl of His Choice. Special Correspondence of The Evening Star. ROCKVILLE, July 5, 1897. Mr. Robert F. Wersham and Miss Ollie Turpin of Charlottesville, Va., were mar- ried here this evening by Rev. Samuel R. White of the Baptist Church. This fs the couple that had such an exciting expe- rience in Washington, in which the police participated, on account of a telegram from the father of the young man, claim- ing that he was under the legal age to marry, and requesting his arrest, as given in The Star of Monday evening. The couple. arrived here on the 5 p.m. train, and, after a visit to the office of the clerk of the circuit court, a license was procured. No time was lost in reaching the residence of the officiating minister, and in a few minutes they were pro- nounced man and wife according to the Maryland law. When the ceremony was concluded they at once took a carriage for the station, and then a train for Washing- ton. The celebration of Independence day was observed here by an almost entire suspen- sion of business. There was no public demonstration during the day, but at night there was the usual display of fireworks in various parts of the town, the finest of which was given by Mr. E. F. Droop of Washington at his country residence on Rockville Heights. Picnics, tournaments and other like amusements were the order of the day. Latest reports from the bedside of Mr. Charles Abert, residing about five miles east of this place, are to the effect that there was no improvement in his condition last night, and his friends here have but little hope of his recovery. —_—____ Judge Kimball’s Ruling. The Blaine Invincible Club held its regu- lar monthly meeting last evening. The as- sociation was called to order by Col. P. H, Carson, who requested the vice president, R. H. Gunnell, to p: fe, and Capt. J. A. Perry served as secretary. The reading of the minutes by the secretary, the report of the executive committee and the em- ployment committee, of which Dr, Lanes is chairman, each showed that the industrial department of the club ts being well man- aged. The Fishermen's Hall, No. Pennsyl- vania avenue, regular headquarters of the club, was filled with over 300 professional business and | ‘ing men. W. H. Gray, as chairman of the execu- tive committe reported approval of the bond of L. O. Carroll as treasurer, and R. 8. Laws, D. D., reported the great ap- preciation of the club as tendered Secre- tary James Wilson of the Agricultural De- partment, and to Contractor Albert Dag- gett for the employment given members of the club. The speakers insisted that the men and women for whom employment is sought by the business committee of the club shall be both polite to their employers and economical in the expenditures of their moneys. It was urged that the good con- duct of the employes has much to do with the business success of their employers. The club strongly denounced all opposi- tion to the purpose and doings of their managers, and declared that it is far more honorable to obtaln work, even at $1 a day, than to hang about the Polive Court to rob—first, the helpless, and then a lawyer of his client, or to die in grief for the want ot something to which such men are not entitled. The speakers also declared that the offi- cial support by the honorable Commis- sioners, the press and business men de- manded not only fair play for the laboring masses, but demanded fair play and pro- tection and respect for their employers. Dr. Laws, chairman of the business com- mittee of employment, reported that the department of classified labor will report at the August meeting. Knox Brown ant Lawyer J. H. Stewart were added to the committee, which is composed now as fol- lows: R. Laws, D. D.; William 8. Lof- ton, M. D.; Prof.'Th. Furby of the public schools, Knox brown and the president, Col. P. H. Carson. It was declered that the organization is not a Perry Carson Club, as some style it, but the Blaine Invincible Club of the la- boring masses, which has been in existence since 1s84, and its permanently representa- tive relation ts found in its executive com- mittee of eleven. ne ae MET JAY GOULD ON A FREIGHT.
