[AMONG THE WORSHIPERS President McKinley Attends Service at the Metropolitan Ohurch. Dr. Johnston's Jubilee Sermon—Dr. Huntley on Single Tax—Texts From Which Prominent Pastors Spoke. President McKinley attended the service at Metropolitan M. E. Church yesterday n-crning, walking to and from the house of worship. He walked down Pennsylvania avenue rapidly, but was a few minutes late, reaching the church in the midst of the opening prayer. He took-a seat near the door, afterward walking to the Presi- dent's pew. The church was crowded. Rev. His text was from Psalm 45:9, his theme being that beauty and spotlesshéss of soul mekes beauty of raiment fitting and ap- propriate. Upon the conctusion of Dr. Johnston's sermon Bishop Hurst added a few words of tribute to the queen. A hymn to the air ef “God Save the Queen” was sung as the close of the service. Rev. Dr. E. D. Huntley of Trinity M. E. Church, southeast, preached yesterday from Acts xvil, ‘And He hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the time before appointed and the bounds of the habitation.” He referred to the single tax and ventured the statement that the time wiil come when there will be a resurrection and the people wiil rise up and im some of the bread acres of the land made by God for their use. The tramp, tramp, tramp of American workmen walk- ing the streets of American cities begging for work was a disgrace, he said, and some- thing would have to be done to bring re- lief. This relief he was of the opinion could be had by the shutting out of all immi- grants for a period of at least twenty-five years. Theso concerts have become one of the features of a trip to the Hall. The sail home at night was a fitting end to a charming out- ing, and was all that could be desired. The Macalester and the River Queen were crowded on all their trips. In spite of the cool weather of yesterday many of Washington's dents spent the day at the various excursion places in the country. At River View the usual large crowd was present, the steamer Pentz, on her three trips to the View, being well filled. The “water chute” furnished emuse- ment for a large portion of the excursion- ists, and the bowling alley and shooting gallery were also crowded all day. The concert by the River View Band, under the leadership of Prof. Chris Arth, jr., was greatly enjoyed. Today the ladies of St. Peter's Church, cn Capitol Hill, are giving their annual excur- sion to River View, and a large crowd has already gone to the View, and more are expected to follow on the evening boat. Tonight S St. Mark's, Christ and St. John’s churches give an excursion to Marshall Hall. A very large number of tickets have been sold, and if the weather Rev. Richsrd P. Another alleged: murderous assault has been committed im this city, and another name has been adied to the police list of fugitives. As in the case of Dorsey Foultz, and the attemptedimurder of “Lem” Diggs, both of whom are fugitives from justice, the parties to this latest assault are col- ored. Andrew Linkins is the name of the fugi- tive, while Martha Linkins, his wife, is the victim of the assault. Their home is in Government alley, near 20th and M streets, and the alleged murderous attempt was committed there about 9 o’clock yesterday morning. Jealousy is said to have been the cause. The weapon ased was a hammer, and it was wielded with so much force on the wife’s head that her skull was broken and she was In a critical condition when taken to the hospital. Andrew Linkins is not more than twenty- six years old, and although he has not figured in police circles to any great extent, most of the third precinct police know him. Once before he figured in a case involving an assault on a woman, but at that time he got caught instead of managing to es- cape. Marital Sea Not Smooth. Married life was not quite so smooth with Andrew as he would have liked it to be and on a number of occasions he and his better half engaged in quarrels; -but yesterday morning their most serious trouble occurred. It was about 9 o'clock, as previously stated, when persons living in the house with Linkins and his wife heard loud noises in their room and a loud scream followed. When the noise made by the wife falling upon the floor was heard a number of persons rushed to her assist- ance, and found her lying on the floor with hicod streaming from an ugly wound in her head, while 01 the floor near her was the hammer, and this implement told the story of the Knock-cut blow the woman had re- ceived. After she had managed to tell that her husband had inflicted the probably fatal weundg she became unconscious. Several policemen were soon at the house to make an investigation, but Lirkins had left there and no one seemed to know where he had gone. Policeman Goucher, in charge ef the wagon, hurried the injured woinan cff to the Emergency Hospital, where veveral doctors were soon in charge of the case. They found her skull badly fractured, and an operation was performed witaout de lay. This morning at the hospital the phy. sicians said that the patient was holding her own. Police on the Lookout.
