The story is in the whimsical vein that characterizes all of Gilbert’s books, while Sullivan has set the eccentrically worded lyrics to music that is entrancing. The Castle Square Opera Company will render this charming combination of dramatic lyrics at the La- fayette Square Opera House next week, and a genuine treat it will prove to those fond of a combination at once pleasing, de- lightful and entertaining. Two successful pro- ducticns of original pieces within one menth is a record of which the Columbia Stock Company may well be proud, for it 1s écoubtful if it was ever paralleled even in the old palmy days of stock companies. While “‘His Little Dodge” had been success- ful in London and Paris, this did not assist the players any, as they were not supplied with a prompt book of either production, and were obliged to supply everything ex- cepting the lines themselves. As they have decided not to con- tinue their starring tour next season, the play was thrown on the market again, and, with customary enterprise, the Columbia managers were the first to secure it. “A Man With a Past” is another comedy by those clever playwrights, Harry and Ed- ard Paulton, authors of “Erminie” and “Niobe.” It will serve to introduce the full strength of the Columbia Stock Company in congenial parts, and, judging from its reception in Boston, where the business dcubled nearly every night, should prove a pleasing bill.
