THE EVENING STAR, SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1897-24 PAGES. A SAFE STOLEN. A Mysterious Robbery of Money and Valuables Reported. Miss Lottie Martin, living at 1357 Ohio avenue, has reported to the police thet her house was robbed Wednesday between 1 and 11 p.m. of a small hand safe contain- ing between $700 and $800 in money. a gentleman's gold watch and several small pieces of jewelry. Miss Martin said she had no clue what- ever as to the perpetrators of the robbery. She examined the safe shortly before 1 o'clock on the afternoon of the day men- tioned, and a little later went out of the house. At that time the safe and its con- tents were intact. She did not return until 11 o'clock, and about an hour afterward went to the bureau in which the safe had been kept to get something, and was amaz- ed to find that the safe had disappeared, as To Explore Mt. St. Eas. Professor Henry G. Bryant cf Philadel- phia in an interview with Secretary Long explained to him the plans of nis proposed expedition for the explora- tion of Mount Elias in Alaska. His purpose is to start very soon’ in company with an expert from tne United States coast and geodetic survey, and with the aid of several of Peary's men to thorcughly explore the country in ihe rear of the big mountain. Secretary Long promised to furmsh the party with leiters to Lieuten- ant Commander Symonds, commanding the Pinta, the only ship which the government maintains ail the time in Ajaskan waters, so that in an emergency the gunboat’s peo- ple might come to the assistance of the ex- plorers. — Normal Pupils Doing the Departments Representative Butler of West Chester, Pa., did the departments yesterday in the best of company. He had with him a party of 12) young ladies and gentlemen, mem- bers of the graduating class of the Normal chool at his home. The party arrived in the city Thursday, after a remarkable run over the Baltimore and Ohio. The trip from West Chester was made in three hours, thus beating all records. Dr. Phil- lips, the president of the Normal School, is in charge of the party. All morning the visitors were busy going through the departments. At each the members were introduced to the in charge. A special visit was paid to the commissioner of pensions. In the afterneon the part by arrangement, met the !’res- ident. ‘Today Mt.
