A PEOPLE OF FEW WORDS. “Let your speech be sea, yea, and nay, nay,” says the Good Book, “for whosoever is more than these cometh of evil.” The Shakers abide by the spirit of this rule. ‘Their words arc few, simple, sincere atd direct. They waste no energy in idle talk; they use it in thinking and doing. And what- ever they do they do with thelr might. They are content with nothing short of the essence and principle of the things they Investigate. They take pains and are patient. And thus the doors of many strange truths open to them. In this way they dis- covered what may almost be called the unity of disease. A venerable Shaker says of it: “It is said that one man’s meat is another man’s poison. That is but bale the truth, ANY MAN'S MEAT IS 4NY MAN'S POISON, under certain conditions. If the grain never got further than the hopper we should never have brerd; and if bread never got further than the stomach we sbould never have strength. When the stomach is torpid, helpless And inflomed the food Hes in it and rots. This fer- mentation prodices poleons which may, and often do, disorder every other organ apd function of the body. ‘This is indigestion or dyspepsia, with mans symptoms or disguises. Cure it and you cure nine- tenths of your complaints.” These words were Uttercd many years ago. Since then thes have found a remedy now known as the Shaker Diges- tive Cordial. It fs made from medicinal plants cultivated by them, It is a food and digests other foods. Taken while eating, It rests the stomach and nourishes the system. The pain and distresses of dyspepsia diseppear defore it. It prevents fer- mentation snd soon restores full power to the di- gestion, It succeeds in the worst cases. It is worthy the name of the people whose name it bears. Any druggist will sell you a trial bottle for ten cents. DDR ( Only one quality lens—the best. Just think of it. Eighty per cent of humanity have eye trouble, while less than 20 per scent wear glasses. The other 60 per cent suffer and suffer. Why not end the doubt in your case by having us exam- ine and test your eyes? No charge for that. Less for bet- ter glasses than most other op- ) ticians can give you. ‘(McAllister& Feast 7 Optical Goods, and Photographic PLL vv Cameras Supplies, Opticians, 1311 F St. SN wee Soe Elphonzo Youngs Co. The sivil service commission is looking fcrward to the proposed investigation of its methods with a good deal cf interest. Mr. Procter, president of the commission,speak- ing to a Star reporter today, said: “We will welcome the investigation, for it is not facts, but misstatements regarding the methods of the commission, that tend to hold it up to ridicule before the publ When the facts are known it will be found that the commission's methods have been such as are calculated to promote the gond of the service. “Take the criticisms of the commission that were made in the Senate the other Gay when the Allen resolution was under consideration. One thing is fortunate, and that is every act of the commission is a matter of record. Senator Allen wanied #n investigation of the alleged political movals from the government service at South Omaha. Here ts our minute book,’ continued Mr. Procter, producing one of the records cf the commission, “and it shows that seven days before the introduction of that resolution the commission ordered an investigation of those charges. It Instruct- ed one of its inspectors to stop at Souch Omaha and make the investigation. Con- gress did not give the commission the ac- ditional appropriation it requested for such work and we have to accompiish the work as best we can. and it was for that reason that the inspector was instructed to stop at South Omaha when he could do so in connection with some other work and make the investigation. “It was charged in the Senate on the occasion of another dcbate that the en- gineer depariment of the army was very much hampered in its work by the rules of the civil service commission. Now, it must be remembered that the commission did not classify the War Department. That was done by the officials of that depart- ment, and they placed under the civil serv- ice law such places 2s were be be benefited by that provided that laborers the classified service, and in case skilled laborers cannoi be secured by a board of examiners provi: for the tem- porary appoi without re The reguiatioi reer corps of the army approved by officers of are what they regard rvice. late ence to the appiying to the en, were suggested as beneficial to the “Senator Hawley Stated that a superintendent of construction was lately called for in his state of Connecticut, and the commission hool teacher from Rhode Islané the records records also show lected we both di that vaiued by oth ned the appointment . one of them since num at 1h ‘One after anot alout the m can be reac the record: I think, to do It will be foa of the apy inclined to call fer: mere literary LIFE 4 F ed Funston Writes an Intere: Letter From Within Coban Lines.
