Grace of New York is about to give $200,000, with a po: sible increase to $2,000,000, for the estab- lishment of a trades school for women. Girls and women thrown upon their own resources for a livelihood have often failed for want of the technical skill necessary to make themselves useful. To furnish women and girls instruction in such of the trades amd occupations in which women are or may be employed, as well as in the various branches of domes tic arts and sciences and of useful and practical knowl and to afford such protection, instruction and assistance to young women, to the end that the become useful and virtuous citizens, Mr. race is seeking for the incorporation of a School to be known as the » Insti- tute of the City of New York. It will be incorporated by an act of the legislature. A bill to that effect has been introduced by Assemblyman L. E. Brown. By the terms of the charter of incorpora- tion the property of the school will be ex- empt from state and county taxation up to $2,000,000, ‘This, it is supposed, Is the sum which Mr. Grace intends donating for the establishment of his undertaking. He, his wife, Lillias G. Grace, and bis son Jeseph, are mentioned in the charter as the incorporators, and they will retain con- trol of the institution. The scope of the work has not yet been fully determined upon, but ine general aim and object of it all will be to make women self-supporting. - one: = ANOTHER WASHINGTON MONUMENT. President McKinley Expected to Take art in the Unveiling Ceremonies, The unveiling of the Washington monu- ment at the Green street entrance to Fair- mount Park, Philadelphia, will take place May 15, and the ceremonies with which the unveiling will be commemorated will be in keeping with the importance of the occa- sion. President McKinley and his cabinet have been invited, and it is expected that they will attend. Distinguished military, naval afd civil personages are also expect- ed. Governor Hastings of Penn: Yivania and Mayor Warwick of Philadelphia and the civic authorities have also promised to be present and to participaie in the cere- monies, The program for the day, for which the State Society of the Cincinnati of Pennsyl- vania is making arrangements, provides for a military display in the afternoon and a banquet in the evening. An unusually large turnout of the National Guard and the regular army is expected to give promi- nence to the military idea of the monu- ment, in keeping with the traditions of Washington, the commander of the armies of the revolution. The parade will move to the monument. President McKinley will be there and will unveil the work, and he will then review the troops. In the evening there is to be a large ban- quet in honor of the President at Horti- cultural Hall. Two hundred guests, repre- senting various states of the Union, have been invited, and distinguished public men will make addresses. The public subscription to the monument fund was opened in 1810, and, though after several years the amount obtained was less than $2,000, the society, by careful fund- ing, has been able to erect the splendid memorial to the memory of George Wash- ington which it 1s about to hand over to the city of Philadelphia. ———_ +e-+ ______ If you want anything, try an ad. in The Star.
