Third-Rail Installat jed Rond: New York Letter In the Phila- By a chance coincidence President Clark of the New Haven railway system and the directors of the elevated railway sys- tem in this city upon the same day fur- nished impressive suggestion of the speedy substitution of electricity for steam power. The directors of the elevated system were prepared some time ago to ne favor- ably impressed with the third-rail system which was adopted by the Chicago ele- vated lines. They had the same fear, how- ever, that others have expressed of the danger to life that is in an exposed rail carrying a powerful current. The president of one of the suburban railway lines said within a week that he would equip his line with the third-rail system were it not for the danger, not to the trains, but to individual life. The experience in Chicago, however, has shown that the danger is not great. If it be known that there is death in the touch of the rail people will shun {t as they shun, unless reckless, walking upon the track. The system is to be first applied to the 2d avenue line, and when it is remem- bered that this line may be brought easily into direct connection with the New Haven line, it may seem that there is more than mere chance coincidence in the fact that President Clark delivered upon the day of the decision of the elevated directors an address to the Connecticut legislature, in which he clearly intimated his faith in the speedy employment of electricity for many, perhaps ultimately for all railway pur- poses. The rolling stock of the New Haven road, which is used for almost: all: its suburban, traffic, is admirably adapted to electrical use. Its cars may be easly brought upon the 2d avenue structure and carried to the Battery. Thus, “thts corporation could deliver its suburban passengers with- out change of cars at any of the stations of the 2d avenue elevated. A year before the death of the very able manager of the elevated system, Colonel Hain, he said, when speaking of the future of those road: “There is no future for them except In the use of electricity. as the motive power. At least, that is my opinion. The only question is what system shall. be used. I think we shall find a system within the ext two years, although I have none in mind when I say that.” Although Colonel Hain is not here to see the vindication of his prediction, yet it has ccme and within the time which ‘he-named. —e0—-____ Congressional Temperance Society.
