Some Mat- | Friday’s Our Remnant Day, Special Bargain Day. We have a stock of merchandise that is absolutely fresh, bright and up to date in every particular. It is so now—it is so always—and it is kept so by reserving each week one day—Friday—on which each de- partment is compelled to mark down and sell all its remnants—odds and ends, short lengths, broken assortments, anything soiled or shop- worn, which may have accumulated during the week, and to mark them down to such prices as will make the quickest possible clearance. With the usual run of remnants we also offer goods purchased especially for bargain day as well as certain lots of goods, such as lagging styles, top- heavy stocks, to-be-discontinued lines and kindred sorts at particularly inviting prices to swell the volume of trade and to close them out quickly. A number of such things for tomorrow, and we've marked them at spe- cially low prices. ting remnants here now that we'd rather be rid of. Local Notes of Interest From Down the River Told in Brief Paragraphs, Evening Star Bureau, No. 121 North Washington street, Telephone 116, Alexardria, Va., February 18, 107. The tramp nuisance in on the Increase on account of the inauguration ceremonies 80 scon to be held in Washington, and daily large swarms may be seen in and around the city. Yesterday afterncon late tramps applica at the residence of J. W. Yates at Del Ray and asked for food. Mrs. Yates, who was alone in the house, gave them something to eat, but this did not satisfy the men, and they asked for clothing, and she gave them the only garment she had to dispose cf, an old vest belonging to her husband. This she handed to one of the men, and he immediately tore it into shreds. She then shut the Coor, but it had hardly been clos- ed before the tramps began to throw stones at the hcvuse at a rapid rate, scaring Mrs. Yates almost into insenstbility. When they desisted and left Mrs. Yates called to a boy named Bell, who was passing, and told him of the occurrence, whereupon Bell started out after the miscreants. He fo! lowed them to town and, on reaching the city limits, saw Policeman Sherwood, to whom he told the circumstances, and the officer immediately put the men under ar- rest and took them to the station house, where they were locked up. They gave their names as Henry Brown, John Rea: don and Richard Finn. Later Bell, Grady and Yates, the husband of Mrs. Yates, called at headquarters and identified Brown as being the principal in the case, and he was held for trial. The other two were released. The meeting was, as usual, behind closed doors. When the meeting was over Mayor Thomp- son said that the only business transacted was the submitting of Chief Webster's monthly report, the ordering of thirty new badges for the ce officers, 1 to 27 for privates, and one each, with ‘the lettering “Chief,” “Lieutenant” and “Sergeant.” Mayer Thompson sald that the reporters will be allowed the same privileges at head- quarters as heretofore. The Stockholders Strike a Snag in Their Litigation. The stockholders of the Central Ohio Railroad Company, who instituted a suit some time since against the receivers of the Baltimore and Ohio, the lessee of the for- mer’s Ine, for the recovery of alleged back rental, have struck a snag. At a meeting held by them a few days ago in Columbus, Ohio, the president, Judge J. H. Collins, made a statement concerning-the circular of Jcseph H. Rieman, William H. Conklin and Basil Gordon of Baltimore, dated January 7, alleging that rental of the Central Ghio was withheld by the Balti- more and Ohio railroad. Judge Collins said the receivers of the Baltimore and Ohio were not operating the Central Ohio rail- road under the lease at all, and cannot = compelled to do so. They are operating under an order of the United States eds The system of accounts that is alleged to be a mere pretext for holding back the rental is required by the order of the court. The statement then went into details, show- ing why, in the judgment of Mr. Collins, hostile measures against the Baltimore and Ohio would not be wise on the part of the Central Ohio company, whose property is leased to the Baltimore and Ohio company. 7. is believed that Judge Collins’ view = e case will be accepted as the proper o and that the pending suit in the United States court at Baltimore will be with- drawn. ——+o-+_____ Death Hastened by Financial Failure.
