Otherwist It W a Quict Sabbath— Simpson's Trial Expected to Be Interesting—Other Items. Evening Star Bureau, No. 121 North Washington st., Alexandria, Va., February 1, 1897. Yesterday afternoon while Officer Fergu- fon was quietly strolling out Henry street, and when near the corner of Princess street, he observed a colored woman go in- to the side gate of the store of “Pat” Travers, and his suspicions were aroused, for he had for some time past been under the impression that spiritous liquors were illegaly being sold there. He quietly went up to a window of the saloon, where he heard some one say, “Which do you want, whisky or gin?” The woman answered gin, and after obtaining it left. She had hardly gotten outside of the gate, however, be- fore she was approached by the officer, who asked her what she had bought in Travers’ place. At first she tried to evade the officer's questions, but finally confessed that she had bought 10 cents’ worth of gin, at the same time handing the officer a bot- tle containing the liquor. She also stated that she had procured liquor from Mr. Travers earlier in the day. The woman was taken to police headquarters, where she gave her name as Lottie Jenkins. She Was detained at the station until this morning. A warrant was then issued for Mr. Travers, charging him with selling spirituous liquor without a license and on Sunday. It will be remembered that during last summer Sergt. Smith and Officer Ferguson started a crusade against the selling of liquor on Sunday and without a li . This morning he was brought beforc Mayor Thompson, who continued the case until tonight at 7 o'clock. A Quict Sunday. Yesterday was another of those quiet Sundays for which old Alexandria is be- coming famous. The congregations at the various churches were about as large as usual. In all the churches except the Sec- ond Presbyterian the resident rectors offi- ciated. In the Second Presbyterian Church Rev. J. McC. Duckwali preached morning and evening. This church has been with- out a rector since the resignation of Rev. T. H. Rice, who went to Atlanta. The re- vival service in Trinity M. E. Church, which h been going on for some t past, was largely attended again last and the rector preached an impressive highly ht and instructive Sermon, which was well ed. A number of persons have y joined the church as a result of the mectiugs. The service at the railroad was largely attended, ard as enthusiastic as su, usual, under the direction of students from the Theological Se y. This work is imes at the services is hard to obtain. Harry Simpson’s Trial. In the corporation court tomorrow the case of Harry Simpson, charged with rob- bing John Ponder, an ex-policeman of Washington, of $60, will be called for trial. Much interest is being manifested in this case, and an interesting trial will be the Ponder, it wil! be remembered, got pree in this city several months ago, and it is alleged Simpson relieved him of money, so Ponder said at the time 2 money was found in Simps D0 session, but Ponder does not anxious to prosecute Simpson, the time of the occurrence Ponder was “red hot” to have Simpson “sent up.” Third Reinacker Lecture. The third of this session’s series of Rein- acker lectures will be given at the Virginia Theological Seminary tomorrow at noon in Whittle Halil. Rev. Dr. Elliott of Ascen- sion Church, Washington, will be the lec- turer. ‘These lectures are open to the pub- lic, and, as they are very interesting, many take advantage of them. Dr. Elliott is well known, and much liked in this vicinity, and his lecture will doubt- less be one of the most interesting of the course. White Assaulted Davis. Rollin White, a young colored dandy, was before Mayor Thompson in the police court, charged with assaulting Charles Davis, also colored. Davis, it is said, got on his “Sunday-go-to-meetings” and started out to call on his best girl Saturday night. When he arrived at the house he found White there ahead of him. He knocked but White refused to let him in, and on his again asking admittance, White rushed out and assaulted him. Mayor Thompson this morning assessed White $7 or twenty days on the gang. ather Stnfford to Lecture. Rey. D. J. Stafford, D. D., will de lecture in the opera house Friday on ver a night, “Dickens: His Power and lecture will be under the the Young Men's Soda Lyceum, and no doubt will be largely at- tended, as its members are busily engaged in disposing of tickets. Benetit Concert. Thursday night, at the opera house, there will be a concert for the benefit of Mrs. Annie Catts Wilson. Mrs. Wilson recently lest her home, with its entire contents, by fire, and is a very worthy woman, and an effort is being made to relieve her, A splendid program has been arranged, and many tickets have alreatly been sold. River Frozen Across. The river continues frozen across from shore to shore except for a small space in the channel which is broken every twelve hours by the passage of the Norfolk boats and the transfer barge between this city and Shepherd's. The ice was thronged with skaters all day yesterday. The ice is in some places more than six inches thick. Police Court. Mayor Thompson this morning disposed of the following cases: J. W. Dowe, charged with assault on Graham Hill, fined $5 or twenty days on the gang; William Fox, colored, charged with disorderly con- duct, fined $7 or twenty days; Leonard White, colored, charged with ‘disorderly conduct, fined $ or twenty days. Henry Gray Dead. Mr. Henry Gray, who had been ill for some weeks, died Saturday night. His fu- neral will take place from his late resi- dence tomorrow. General and Personal Notes. A meeting of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union was held in the M. BE. Church today at 2 o'clock. The property advertised for sale on Sat- urdey by Messrs. W. E. Holtzman and James R. Caton, trustees, was withdrawn. Miss Eliza Daingertield ts visiting her sister, Mrs. Charles H. Carter, in Balti- more. Mr. William Jennings Bryan is expected to visit friends in this city during the latter part of the month. Mr. William B. Corse and bride, formerly Miss Montague of St. Louis, are in the city. ‘They will leave for Europe this week. The condition of Mrs. J. T. Beckham, who-has been quite ill, was somewhat im: proved this morning. ‘The funeral of the late Lemuel Robey whose death was mentioned in The Sta! took place from the German Lutheran Church yesterday. Constable Will Webster got stuck in a snowdrift near Ballinger’s farm yesterday, and it took him several hours to extricate his horse and buggy. Messrs. Breen, Feely and Howell, con- tractors of this city, have, it is said, been awarded the contract for stone work at Sheridan’s Point, just below this city, where the United States government is pre to build extensive fortifications. The Godfrey laundry plant in this city has been sold to the Troy Laundry Com- pany. Mr. R. W. Joyce has gone to Cincinnati on business.
