The Opposition Was Too Strong and | the Mercantile Trust Company Wil | i Continue — Other Matters. j : \ ; The railroad world has been much ex- | cttea for a week past regirding the pro- ceedings of a meeting of the board of di- | rectors of the Seaboard Air Line, which | took place at Portsmouth, but concerning which nothing has until now been made known. All sorts of rumors have heen in circulation as to what there transpired, | and the accepted belief tn most circles has | been that the Seaboard was getting ready to renew active hostilities with the South- | ern Railway Company. | Mr. Hoffman's Proposition. | The Siar ts able to state on the highest | authori y that there is not the slig | probabllity that there will be another ra war between the two gémpantes named, and that the most earnest efforts will be made by the managers of both companies to secure a% much business as possible at remunerative r: 0 that the special matter under con. n by the directors was a proposition made | Curzon Hofiman to take | tile Trust and Deposit Company of Balti- more the financial agency of the Seaboard, which it has had for a number of years. and to select another agent. It is said that Mr. Hoffman frankiy stated that the rea- son he wanted to make a change in the financial agency of the road was because of the course r ntly pursued by Gen. John G.ll, the president of the Mercantile Trast and Deposit Company, in forming a pool. the object of which was to enable outside parties to xet control of the yoard, and as a matter of course, oust Mr. Hoffman from his present position. The Opposition Won. Much to the surprise of the friends of Gen. Gill, Mes: Louis McLane and ©. D. Fisher, the former of wo: Mr. Hoffman's closest friends and the aging member of the Moffman-Me! pool, rallied to the defense of the Trust Company and tcok that Gen. Giil centile securities he had a perfe-t righ make a change that there was no reason in the agency. Subsequently G Hoffman met in ccnyersation re ticulawly of the their differences, and hei pected there will b= nc the two gentlemen. It is also understood that as a re the bridging of the chasm two magnates the oppo: man's friends to th 4 Gill to the presidency of the a Trust and Deposit Company will cease. Mr. Robinson's Death Will Have No Effect There is considerable talk among railroad men as to the probable effect in Seaboard interesis of the sudden death of Mr. Mon- cure Robinson a few days ago. Mr. Rob- inson having ‘been one of the pool which held 8,000 shares of the Seaboard stock. and who was also one of those who was unal- terably opposed to permitting the Seaboard to pass out of the control of the present management. It is not likely that the sad event will have any effect whatever in the direction in which the alarm reported was felt, as Mr. Robinson's stock, as is also that of the majority of the holders, is bound up in the pool arrangement ‘or five years, and the agreement, which was drawn up in sirictly legai form, cannot be dissolved during that period except with the consent of three- fourths of the stock deposited. To Remove the Injunction. it is understood that General Counsel L. R. Watts of the Seaboard will at an early date ask Judge Hughes of the United States court at Richmond to name a day in Jan- uary upon which the former can move to have removed the temporary injunction granted some months ago by the court to prevent the Seaboard Air Line from re- ducing rates. The proposed action of Judge Watts is regarded as a step that is necessary to be taken in order to formaily close the legal proceedings instituted when the active hos- tilities were going on some time ago, as the case was practicaliy avandoned by the Mer- cantile Trust and Deposit Company of Bal- timore, which insiituted it, long since. >- friction between BOOTHS PE RECALLED.
