10 -THE EVENING STAR, WEDNESDAY,’ NOVEMBER 25,°1896—12 PAGES. THE HOME MARKET CLUB Members and Their Friends Listen to the Soldier Orators. Speeches by Gens. Alger and Howard, Corporal Tanner and Others—Im- portance of the Election. ‘The Home Market Club of Boston gave a banquet at Mechanics’ Hall, Boston, last night. A thousand members, representing industries of nearly every city and town in the state, gathered about the tables, and when the feast was over listened with a thousand more in the galleries to addresses by some of the Union veterans who made @ speechmaking tour of the country in the interests of the republican ticket during the recent campaign. Senator Hoar and Lieutenant Governor Wolcott also spoke. President W. A. Stort of Lowell opened the proceedings by reading a letter from President-elect McKinley and then intro- duced Lieutenant Governor Wolcott. Senator Hoar, who followed the Meuten- ant governor, said the democratic party had been saved from itself by republican effort. ‘Then came speeches by_Generai_ Russell A. Alger, General O. O. Howard, Corporal Tanner and others. General Howard cau- tioned his hearers against putting too znuch confidence in thelr democratie allies. Already there are mutterings in New York, he said, against McKinley. “No Party Won the Victory.” Responding to the toast, “Wrecks of the Rebellion,” General Alger said “The three most tmportant events in our nation’s history were the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 and no less in importance, the election of William Mc- Kinley in 1596—all patriotic and tn no sense partisan victories. The patriotie people won a victory over law- S, repudiation, dishonor. No party Won the victory, but the lawablding, peace- loving members of all can rejoice in our escape from a great peril and know that they acted an important part In the rescue of our country from threatened disaster. “The crisis, however, is not yet passed. Our lawmakers and executives by wise, conservative acts must meet the needs of all the people, and by such legislation and administration of affairs merit the confi- dence so willingly given. -To this end let us all, regardless of party ties, give our best counsels and efforts that the sun of prosperity may not again be clouded from us.” General Alger closed his remarks by pay- ing an eloquent tribute to President Cleve- land, and for the first time in the club's history three cheers were given by the members for Mr. Cleveland. Illiteracy and Bryan's Vote. Ex-Commissioner Tanner said: “The most cursory examination of the returns of the late election shows that hand in hand with the greatest ratfo of illiteracy went the greatest ratio of Bryan support. Looking upon the probability of his election as hav- ing invoived serious peril to the republic, it seems to me that fact should bring us many degrees nearer the point where the fundamental law of the land shall declare that the Individual who cannot read a bal- lot shall not have the power to cast one. When the time comes, gentlemen, the point be forever past when rhetoric and rabbit's feet will be potent factors with n sovereigns in a presidential cam- n. “On what rests the and hi in hopes of Mr. Bryan s the future? Under st leader do they expect to march in campaign? The answer comes from ranks on every side—general adver- On this they stake their future polit- al fortunes.
