14 THE EVENING STAR ‘UESDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1896-16 PAGES. _ — — MR. PRITCHARD’S CHANCES The Fight Going on for the North Carolina Republicans Have No Fear for Prit- chard’s Safety—Populists Assert They Are Not Pledged. Correspondence of the Evening Star. RALEIGH, N. C., November 20, 1896. Almost all the political talk in North Tarolina now is about the senatorship. At one time some persons ‘thought Senator Butler's .fight on Senator Pritchard was not sincere, but all now take the latter view. It is a death struggte;-poptfists as- sure The Star correspondent. The populist state chairman says thirty pepulist mem- bers-elect of the legislature write him they have made no pledge to vote for Pritchard. He declines to express his own opinion as to the matter further than to say he be- lieves a silver man will be elected. But teday a populist state committeeman, A. L. Peace, talked quite freely. He said: “The populists are distinctively in this sen- atorship fight, and are going to have a say in the matter. I do not think the repub- licans have succeeded in securing as many populist members as they claim. I think they have secured some, but under certain conditions, the latter being that Pritchard should declare for silver or else be the man whose course is indorsed by the popalist caicus. 4 ‘The populists most “as themselves as under no obligations to the republicans or to Pritchard by reason of the election of Butler last year. The fact is, they deny that there was any agreement to re-elect Pritchard, and say if there was an implied one it was on the basis that Pritchard was for free silver.” ‘The republicans reiterate their assertions that they have no fear of securing enough populist votes to assure Pritchard's safety. t is learned, however, that there are some republicans who would like to see Pritch- grd defeated. Richard Williams, member of the present legislature, says he was to meet certain republicans and discuss this matter. Some months ago Congressman Bettle and State Chairman Holton were earnest in their opposition to Pritchard. A knowledge of their real attitude now would be interesting. But Holton now says he has never hag much doubt of Pritchard's re-election. ‘The populist memters-elect_who write to Chairman Ayer (spd their letters are to appear in Senator Butler’s paper next week if it gets out of the sheriff's hands) all unite in denouncing Chairman Holton and Republican Committeeman H. L. Grant, who make the plain assertions that popu- ists are for Pritcharé Brunewick county w knew if a populist in the state is so false to his party as thus to betray it? I know all manner of effcrts to secure a gold Sena- tor will be made. I hurl back Holton’s in- sult to the populists and say they will not sell their votes.” Senator Mitchell of the seventh district. says: “I informed a joint corrmittee meeting of populists and repub- licans that 1 was untrammeled.” Senator McCaskey of the second district writes: “I do not believe a solitary populist has unccndit‘onally pledged himself to vote for the reptblican nominee, especially when it 4s snnounced that the latter will be a gold man.” A leeding populist says: “I hear the re- publicans are willing to spend $100,000 to elect a gold man, and I believe this to be Committeeman Peace says he knows the struggle will be a fierce and prolonged uredly regard one. ernor Daniel L. The Great Engineer Succumbs to Ex- haustion Caused by Overwork, George Ferris, who conceived and built the Ferris wheel, died at the Mercy Hos- pital in Pittsburg Sunday of typhoid fever. His illness was brief, and it s only Fri- day that he was taken to the hospital. The attending physicians say his system was greatly run down by overwork. orge Ferris was born at Galesburg, Il, on pruary 1, 1859. When he was but very young the family removed to Carson City, Nev., and it was there the young Wheel-builder spent the years of his early boyhood. In 1876 he came east. He began a course at the Rensselaer Polytechnic In- stitute of New York city in that year. In ISsl he graduated with high honors. It was in INv2 that Mr. Ferris conceived the idea of the wonderful Ferris wheel, that has attracted the attention of all the people of the world, and which will go down in history as one of the greatest won- ders of the century. The monster passen- ger wheel conceived by Mr. Ferris was built under his personal supervision. His design was a novelty so absolute and original that the powers of the fair hesi- tated to so much as give it recognition. After first granting a concession, the direc- tory withdrew it, and not until December 16, just four and a half months before the fair would open, was the concesstom finally confirmed. Under the cireumstances, i no other country but America would the wheel have ever been built. It took three years to complete the Eiffel tower. Even here it took two years to build the St. Louis bridge. Both were comparatively simple work. The builder of the Ferris wheel had not only to construct a work equaling these, but in such a way that it would move, and, moreover, move perfectly—a far greater problem. —— An Opening for American Beef. The United States consul at Zurich has reported to the State Department that there fs a fine opening for American beef in the Swiss market. “Now or never,” he says, “is the time for American cattlemen to make an effort to introduce American beef into Switzerland. It must be remem- bered, however, that France and Italy are ready and able to supply the shortage, and if our people want a share of this trade they must bring their cattle over here, for no Swiss butcher or cattle dealer will ven- ture to buy animals in America and bring them over at his own risk or expense.” AUCTION SALES OF REAL ESTATE, &é Thos.” Dowling &Co., Aucts., O12 Bret.
