24 SUBURBAN NEWS ANACOSTIA, A prominent member of the Citizens’ Association said last evening that {t was the intention of himself and his colleagues to have a meeting of the sssociation fm a few days, as there are a number of important public matters that are much im need of attention. One of these is to ascertain the probable period when the Capital Railway Company will com- mence to construct its line from Congress Heights to Washington. Some time ago a survey of the line was made and persons interested were in- formed, so it is said, that {t would be but a short time until the rails would be laid and only 2 little longer until the road would be in such # conditiva that people could have the satisfaction of riding in rapid-transit cars over it. Since the completion 92 the survey there has not been anything whatever done looking toward the construction of the prop- erty, and the people of Anacostia, many of whom, totably Mr. K. B. Buckley, Mr. W. C. Van Hoy, Mr. W. H. Peck and others, labored day after day at the Capitel to induce the District committees of the Senate and House to make a favorable re- Port on the amendments to the charter of the company and were finally successful in thelr un- dertaking, are not disposed to walt much longer to see the work begin, and some of those who took the active part in pushing the scheme through Congress say that if ing t# not soon dene ‘toward carrying out the provisions of the law they will take into cousideration the propriety Of secing If the promoters of the enterprise cannot be compelled to take steps toward building the read. Mr. Handle, the vice president and general manager, in explaining the delay, sald this was unavoidable, but that he had completed the neces- sary flaancial arrangements, and the actual work of construction will be begun within two weeks. The associstion will also, It Is said, be asked to request the District Commissioners to build a sewer in Maple avenue and also to issue an order that the operations of the street cleaning department be extended so as to inclrde that and seme other Streets. At present the street cleaners do not go east of Moaroe street, and as the result the gutters ig Maple avenue and other streets runuing east and west are overgrown with grass and weeds, and they are, in the Judgment of many persons, the cause of much of the sickness in the town. ‘The association will also, it iy probable, take up the subject of the reclamation of the Anacostia flats, Which are now, and to a greater extent than they have been for ‘years past, the receptacle for fith of nearly all kizds. This,’also, it is believed, contributes ® liberal share toward the malaria of the neighborhood. A well-known citizen of the town 1s authority for the statement that steps will at ,once be taken residents of Anaco-tla who ure acquainted with “Punk” Burrell of Hillsdale, who is under sen- tence to be hanged in November for the killing of uiney Mackall, to circulate petitions asking the ‘resideut to commute the sentence to imprisonment for life. Those who are taking the lead in the ovement express the beltef that they will be able to bring snch aa influence to bear as will induce Mr. Cleveland to spare the young man's Ife. ‘The residents of Minneeota avenue are bighly gratified at the action of the District Commission- «rs in onlering the placing of lamps on that thor- cughfare and the Benning road, snd the people of Hillwdale are equally well pleased that twenty- four lamps are to be placed by the same authority Niebols avenue. The hand rail ta many parts of the Navy Yard bridge ts in what appears to be a very unsafe condition, although a day or two ago workmen tied the rail with wire to the pests, from which it Rad become loosened. ‘The Current Events Club will at their next meet- lag discuss the curreacy question. =e FALLS CHURCH.
