The case of Emil West, the young man charged with having attempted to burn the store of Eiseman Bros., corner of 7th and E streets, about ten days ago, was finally dis- posed of by Judge Miller yesterday after- noon. During the hearing the question of the identity of the coat worn by the de- fendant at the time the fire was started was discussed. Witnesses for the governm stated that he wore a blue and white stripe office coat, while the defendant produced a light coat, which he said he wore on the day charged. No Certainty as to Richard Bayliss’ Assassin—Charter Amended ry Other Local Notes. The funeral of the late Richard H. Bay- liss, whose body was found floating in the river near the foot of King street Monday last, and whe according to the verdict of the coroner's jury was murdered, took place yesterday afternoon from his late home on upper King street. Rev. J. T. Williams of M. E. Church South conducted the funeral services, which were attended by a large number of relatives and friends of the deceased. The members of the Vet- eran Friendship Fire Company, of which the deceased was a member, attended in a Lody. The interment was in &t. Paul's cemetery, and the pallbearers were Messrs, Joseph Huntington, Louis Shuman, E. Pad- gett, N. Nowland, A. Butts and F. Didszo- reit. No steps have as yet been made to capture the supposed murderer of Mr. Bay- liss. It will be remembered that a long- boatsman named George Brown was the last person seen with Mr. Bayliss, and the coroner's jury brought in a verdict a ing Brown of having caused Mr. Baylis ceath. Commonwealth Attorney Marbury is in Richmond, and will not return until tomorrow, and in the meantime no action will be taken. Charter Amended. Judge J. K. M. Norton of the corporation court yesterday granted an amendment to the charter of the C. C. Smoot & Sons Co., by which that company is allowed to in- crease its capital stock to issue bonds, and is given other privileges. This company has now in successful operation tanneries in this city, Rappahannock county, and in North Carolina, and is constantly increas- ing its business, Struck With a Brick. Walter Cline, 2 young white man, quite badly hurt Wednesday night by belng struck in the face with a brick by a young man named John Allen. The assault oc- curred on South Fairfax street near the tunnel, and grew out of a quarrel which began while the men were skylarking. Last night young Allen was before the mayor and fined $5. Wanted for Stealing a Watch. Mr. R. M. McKeown of New Alexandria reported at police headquarters yesterday the theft of a lady’s handsome gold watch from his residence at that p) The dis- appearance of the watch was coincident with the disappearance of a white man named John Johnson, and Mr. McKeown has every reason to believe that Johnson, who had been in his employ, had stolen the watch. The Junior Order of United American Mechanics will celebrate Independence day by a reunion and a picnic at Vienna, Va. The program contemplates a Fourth of July celebration of the od sort, with music, speeches, games and fireworks. The members of the order will assemble at Harris’ Hall Saturday merning at 8 o’clcck, and after a short march up the avenue, headed by the Henderson Drum Corps, will take the 9 o'clock train for Vienna.
