Early Friday night, November 6, 1880, a bright light was reflected from the clouds above Mauna Loa that increased in bril- Hancy untit morning. All day Saturday &reat clouds of smoke could be seen at Hilo, fifty miles away, rising.from the mountain as from a city that had been swept by a great conflagration. Saturday evening the mountain was wrapped in clouds, but toward midnight they scattered, revealing a spectacle that was magnificent beyond all description. The summit crater was emitting a dense smoke, lighted up by the molten lake of lava. Below, on the mountain side, was an embrasure from which the lava was running down like a river. Not a break could be seen from the outlet to the very head of the fiery mass. It was a continuous stream of glowing lava, heated to incandescence, moving steadily down the mountain side. It was like a living creature gliding out of its fiery prison house all aglow, . “Squirming and gliding in the mountain's blaze, Like a great serpent with a skin of gold.” Its progress was rapid, considering the distance of the point of view, and subse- quent observation along the line of the flow proved that the velocity must have been tremendous. Mr. David Hitchcock, who was camping on Mauna Kea at the time of this outbreak, Saw a spectacle that few human eyes have ever beheld. “We stood,” writes he, “on the very edge of that flowing river of rock. Oh, wnat a sight it was! Not twenty feet from us was this immeense bed of rock slowly moving forward with irresistible force, bearing on its surface huge rock and immense bowlders of tons’ weight as w: ter would carry a toy boat. The whole front edge was one bright red mass of solid reck incessantly breaking off from the towering mass and rolling down to the foot of it, to be again covered by another ava- lanche of white-hot rocks and sand. The whole mass at its front edge was from twelve to thirty feet in height. Along the entire line of tts advance it was one crash of rolling, sliding, tumbling red-hot rock. We could hear no explosions while we were rear the flow, oniy a tremendous roaring like ten thousand blast furnaces all at work at once.” This was the most extensive fiow of recent years, and its progress from the interior plain through the dense forests above Hilo and out on to the open levels close to the town was startling and men- acing enough. Through the woods espe- cially it was a turbulent, seething mass that toppled over mammoth trees, and licked up streams of water, and day and night kept up an _unintermitting cannonade of +xplosions. The steam and imprisoned gases would burst the congealing surface with loud detonations that could be heard for many miles. It was not an infrequent thing for parties to camp out close to the flow over night. Ordinarily a lava flow moves sluggishly and congeals so rapidly that what seems like hardihood in the nar- rating is in reality calm judgment, for it is perfectly safe to be in the close vicinity of a lava stream, and even to walk on its sur- face as soon as one would be inclined to walk on cooling iron in a foundry. This notable flow finally ceased within half a mile of Hilo, where its black form is a Perpetual reminder of a marvellous deliver- ance from destruction. ———+e+ An Eccentric Pianist. From the New York Post. After an interval of fourteen years Lon- don has again heard the pjanist D'Albert, whose nationality is so great a puzzle. He has a French name and was born in Scot- land. His mother was English, and his fa- ther, a well-known dancing master, was the son of a captain of French artillery and of a German mother, whose ancestors were Russian! Though educated in Eng- land, he adopted Germany as his country, and wrote savage remarks about the “British barbarians.” At his reappear- ance in London there was “little or no ap- plause” when he first came on the stage, but matters mended gradually, and his greatest success was won with Liszt's “Don Jua fantasia, to the great disgust of the critics, who cannot understand why ucated audiences, the world over, and t pianists likewise, should be so fond of Liszt. One of the critics says that, save for @ full-grown mustache, D’Albert is much the same boyish figure which he presented in 1882. coe Finest Pearls in Europe. From Woman. On the occasion of the grand dinner to the Emperor and Empress of Germany at Ven- ice by the King and Queen of Italy, the queen wore her wonderful pearl necklace, which has no equal in the world. When she was first engaged to King Humbert, who was then Prince of Naples, he presented her with a single string of these precious stones, each as big as a hedge sparrow’s egg, and of the most perfect form and color imagin- able. Margarita being the Greek for pearl, the offering had a special significance. At every birthday since the king has presented his beloved consort with another string, each one being a little longer than the last, so that the later ones now reach far below her majesty’s waist. While on the subject of pearls, a few other ornaments composed of these exquisite jewels are worth mention. The Empress Frederick of Germany has a very fine collar necklace composed of thirty enormous pearls of exquisite shape and color, and it is sald she wears them both day and night, as the luster of these almost Hving treasures is immensely en- hancgd by contact with the human form. Our own queen possesses what is supposed to be the “pinkest” of all pearl necklaces, and It is reported to have been part of the dowry of Queen Catherine of Arragon. The marvelous black pearl necklace of the Empress of Austria is well known, and she has worn it incessantly ever since the sad death of the Archduke Rudolph; attached to it is a curious black diamond, having a quaint effect quite unique. Lady Ilchester has a very fine string of the same black pearls, which is often seen in London draw- ing rooms. Of single pearls of immense size the present pope, Leo XIII, is possessor of the most famous, a superb jewel, given by one of the doges of Venice to a former holder of the rapal throne; it is arranged as a reliquary, and has a spike of the crown of thorns placed behind it in a gold case. 200 Galls and Steamers. From Our Arimal Friends. Perhaps the most entertaining of all sea birds are the gulls, of which several spe- cles may commonly be met with, chiefly along the coasts. Gulls, as a rule, find flight more difficult than other birds which we have described. They keep close to the ship, and when they are accustomed periodically to beat over a certain path their wits become sharpened and they afford no end of amusement to the pas- sengers. A crowd of gulls will follow a vessel all day, returning doubtless to the nearest land. Next morning there will be another gang at daybreak, but it may be of a wholly different species. A jolly crew are a flock of gulls. I have watched them by the hour flying abreast of the steamer from ten to twenty-five feet from the ship's rail, every eye on the porthole from which refuse of the cook's galley is dumped into the sea. Generally, this grateful event takes place just after meal times, and a gull will follow a ship ten hours for the sake of one mad dash at the scraps which it expects to be con- signed to the ocean. The gull cannot be fooled with anything short of fresh meat or crackers. I have tried orange peel and scraps of pasteboard, which I tossed into the air or into the sea, and not a bird turn- ed a feather! But if you hold a scrap of cracker in your hand you shall see every bird draw as near as he dares, with a knowing blink and turn of the head. Toss it into the air and a wild scream isstes from fifty throats; as many pairs of wings flash in the sunlight; fifty pairs of red or black legs dangle in the air, and the scrap never reaches the sea! The great event is when the dinner scraps go overboard from the galley. There is a mad scramble, the air is filled with hoarse cries, the whole flock settles on the water with uplifted wings, each screaming and flapping in the vain effort to get all there is for itself. The steamer gces on, leaving a white, struggling spot en the water in its wak But presently they start after her again, and with quick, nervous strokes they reach her side, to sail serenely on with her as before. The mcst amazing piece of business I ever saw was a gull coolly preening itself with its bill while it was following in full flight, apparently without an effort. and Pa.
