Washington Southern Railway Company vs. city council, on a writ certiorari to re- view the action of city council in refusing to reduce the assessment upon the property of the railway company in this city; argued and submitted. Court then adjourned un- til today, when the case of Richard Bur- nett—charge, highway robbery—will be heard. Flag day, and also Children’s day,was observed at the Presbyterian Church at Boyd's Sunday night. ‘The exercises entitled “On Wings of Praise’”’ were retdered by the young people. ‘The most notable features of the ocssion were the addresses by t young peopie and the excellent singing by the young ladies. The church was prettily decorated with flowers. Addresses were made by Messrs. G. F. Pollock and Edward Lewis, ‘Ihe church was ‘crowded. ‘The Bultimore and Obio Railroad Company fs having a fine bridge built across the: Little Seneca near Boyd's, Over 110,000 yards of masonry will be used in the corstruction. It is thought it will cost between $100,000, and $130,000 to complete the bridge. Bennett & ‘Talbott ' of Pennsylvania are the contractors for excavating and masonry. Mrs. Nettle Barnes, wife of John Barnes of Washington, D.C., died at her father’s home at Barnesville, Montgomery county, Friday last. | Her remains were interred In the Beallsville cemetery Sunday. The Vermont Avenue ¥ of the W. C. T. U., under the efficient management of Mrs. Bradley, Mrs. Copeland, Mrs. Darling, Mrs. Weish and Mrs. Sweet, gave a lawn party last night to the messenger boys of the District. The grounds were brilliantly {l- luminated and the C. G. Conn Drum Corps was present to supply any deficiency of music after the messenger boys had done their best with all the various street songs of the day. The boys were dressed in their best and on their good behavior, with fuil permission to have a good time in their own peculiar way. What program had been made ready for the occasion was nec- essartly condensed, rather than interrupt the hilarity of the young guests. Mr. Pear- son made a short speech, congratulating the boys on being young and happy, and Mr. Gilbert Clarke sang a solo, which was cheered long and loudly. Johns, rector of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church at Rockville and Emanuel Church, Gaithersburg, and also secretary of the Episcopal diocese of Washington, has received a call from the congregation of St. Michael’s Church, Tren- ton, N. J., and now holds the same under advisement. Rev. Mr. Johns has for a number of years held the rectorship of his church at Rockville and Gaithersburg, both of which are in a flourishing condition.
