VERNON. The New Electric Road Opened in a Satisfactory Manner. The public opening of the Washington, Alexandria and Mount Vernon - Electric Railway Company took place yesterday, and the new line was: largely patronized. The test of the new line was made Sat- urday, when the first train carrying pas- sengers left the station, corner of 13!3 street and Pennsylvania avenue, and ran direct to the gate of Mount Vernon. On this occasion more attention was paid by those officially interested in the per- formance of the delicate machinery with which each motor car is equipped than to speed, and every movement of the motor was carefully observed by them and also by representatives of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company. Among the party were Mr. Joseph Craw- ford, general agent of Pennsylvania rail- road; Mr. George H. Brown, a son of the chief engineer of the same system, and who is also one of the company’s electrical engineers, and Mr. J. J. Cooper, also of the Pennsylvania; General Manager G. E. Abbot, Chief Engineer D. J. Howell, As- sistant Engineer C. McC. Lemley, Vice President Park Agnew, Superintendent B. F. Flint, General Pasenger Agent G. R. Phillips, Auditor H. A. Swartz, Assistant Treasurer J. R. Swartz, J. Calvin, superin- tendeat of motive power, and W. A. Epp- ley, general trainmaster, all of the elec- | tric railway company; also the following members of the office staff: H. K. Hought, Miss Stern, the Misses Dyer, Miss Winkel- man and Mrs. Allen. Citizens of Alex- andria on board, as the guests of Vice President Park Agnew, were: Mayor Thompson, Dr. M. O'Brien, Messrs. Henry Strauss, William H. May, L. Marbury, L. Cc. Barley, James R. Caton, R. Mertens, R._H. Cook and others. The operations of the train were pro- nounced perfect, and the roadbed was found to be in every respec® fit to carry passengers over, while the machinery at the two power houses worked satisfactor- ily. —_—_——._—_.
