The displacement, to be sure, very slight—not more than twenty secon: of an angular measurement at the most, a@ quantity quite inappreciable to the naked eye—but it Is a matter of which the a: tronomer must continually take account in determining a star's true position. One of ant “cor! of his observed ition of a star aberration,” his con he never sees a star exactly where with the exception of the case above noted. Jupiter, too brilliant to be mistaken for an ordinary Star, will be found at that hour low in the west. It is 1 a magnificent object for the raked-eye observer end still makes a | fine sh in a telescope, although it 1s now omcre than 120,040,000 miles further han when we passed between it in, in Janvary 1: now the most attractive of the and is pow in the height of his as on evening star. So many good drawings of Seturn have five-in the by been published In recent years that every who has even the most superficial knowledge of astronomy has a fairly good of hew this wondreus ringed world in the fleld of a telescop But no one who has never seen it for himself can have more than a feeble impression of its surpassing bheouty as a telescope ob- ject. It is on tco, When we actually see it and reclize that what we are looking at is no mere picture, but the thing itself, that we are struck forcibly with the great mystery of its gigantic rings, which, small as tney appear in the telescope, have a diameter of 170,000 miles What are they? They appear to be solid, but La Place demonstrated mathematically that they couid not be solid and maintain their equilibrium. It has been shown, too, that they canaot be fluid. ‘The view which of late years has heen held, as the only al- ternative, is that they consist of millions of minute bodies—meteorites—each of which les round the planet, tn its own orbit, as @ minute gatellite. On this view the in- ner margin of the ring should circle faster | than the outer, the difference in their rates of motion being easily calculated. Recent- ly Professor Keeier of the Allegheny ob- servatory has found by observation with the spectroscope that this 1g the case—that the inner mar moves faster than the . the observed difference in their rates being that required by theory, within the Umis of probable error of observation. About five degrees to the southeast of Saturn is the planet Uranus, appearing as a star of about the sixth magnitude, and therefore Just vistble to a person with ex- 1 yesight. It can be seen by any one an opera glass. Te find it point the glass first to Saturn; then move it to the left and downward, and as Saturn passes out of the field Uranus will come into view. There are two or three stars here which are liable to be mistaken for the planet, but a few nights’ observation will decide the croice among them, for the planet !s now movirg slowly toward the west. About the Moon. After the 9th of the month Mercury will be a morning star, and by the close of the month it will be visible in the east in the morning twilight. Venus is still a morning star, but she is sow too near the sun to be visible. Mars has crossed the celestial equator and is now in the no feaate ; thern hemisphere, in the " to be. | Constellation Pisces. It is a morning star, t called for an ec, | Hsing, almost exactly in the east, between Stpon the true | Laud 2am. ‘The earth ts now moving in its not come | . but occupies able time. So it is with light. A Necessary Correction. To illustrate by a special case, the earth is now situated very nearly in a straight! Une with the sun and the star Antares, in the Scorpion, which we may see low in the southeast. That is, an observer on the sun Would see the planet earth very near this star. Woe are therefore now moving at Tight angles to the direction in which the light comes to ug from Antares—moving to- yard the east. The light of the star, thero- fore, strikes us in the face, so to say, keep- ing up the analogy with rain; we run against {t in such @ way that it seems td come to us from a point a little to the east that from which it actually does come. Fo @ compequence, the star {s seen a little to the east of its true position. Since we are always in motion, the star eat t almost directly toward the planet, and distance from it ts decreasing rapidly. New moon will fall this month on the lith, at S43 a.m., Washington mean time; full moon on the 25th, at 7 a.m The moon will be in “perigee"—the point in {ts orbit at which It Is the nearest to the earth—on the 20th, at 3 p.m. The moon's pesition at 9 p.m. for every day of the month gn which she is above the horizon at that hour is shown In the planisphere. On the 20th, at 5 p.m., Washington mean time, the sun will enter Cancer, and it will be midsummer in the northern hemisphere. Her Bloomers Frightened Off the Bear From tho Morning Oregonian.
